The Magus

The Magus is the public face of a Genestealer Cult: a nearly human, psychically gifted hybrid who infiltrates society while the Patriarch lurks in the shadows. It’s the cult’s mouthpiece, recruiter, and mind-bender, and killing it is a top priority for anyone trying to stop an uprising.

What the magus is

A Magus is a 4th-generation Genestealer Hybrid, born when a psychic species like humanity gets infected. That psychic parentage, mixed with xenos DNA, produces a being with formidable mental powers.

They look almost human, though they’re always bald and heavy-boned. That near-normal appearance is the whole point: it lets them move through society without raising alarms.

Role in the cult

The Magus acts as the cult’s spokesperson, hiding the operation behind a legitimate religious, political, or social movement. The Patriarch can’t do that, so the Magus becomes the bridge between the cult and the outside world.

Only the Patriarch outranks them. Below those two, there’s barely any hierarchy, which makes both prime targets for Imperial assassins. Take them out and the cult falls apart.

Psychic powers and familiars

A Magus can coerce or enslave minds, turning people to the cult’s cause without them even realizing it. When a Magus and Patriarch dominate a region, the psychic shadow around them thickens and hardens into a many-limbed creature called a Genestealer Familiar, which serves the Magus directly.

Multiple magi and rivalries

Early on, a cult usually has just one Magus. As it spreads, new Magi rise as regional lords, and they often compete for the Patriarch’s favor. Cults also shelter rogue psykers, hoping to increase the odds of producing more Magi.

Notable magi and the other magos

Named Magi include Orthan Trysst of the Four-Armed Emperor cult on Ghosar Quintus, Phoenicia Jai of the Cult of the Wrything Wyrm, and figures like Bijall Calcearius, Davien, and Marovitch Tenndarc.

Don’t confuse the Magus with the Adeptus Mechanicus rank of Magos (plural Magi). That’s a tech-priest who replaces flesh with cybernetics and masters a discipline. Same word, totally different faction.

FAQ

What’s the difference between a Magus and a Magos?

A Magus is a Genestealer Cult leader, a psychic hybrid. A Magos is a high-ranking tech-priest of the Adeptus Mechanicus. They share a similar name but belong to completely different factions.

How do you stop a Magus?

Kill it, ideally along with the Patriarch. Without those two, the cult loses its leadership and falls into disarray, making it easier for a military force to purge.

Can a Magus control minds?

Yes. Its psychic abilities let it coerce or enslave others, which is how it turns people to the cult without open force.
