The Pathfinder Team

The Pathfinder Team is the T’au Empire’s forward reconnaissance unit, ranging ahead of a Hunter Cadre to find the enemy, paint targets with Markerlights, and call down guided fire. They’re some of the most respected and most expendable troops in the Fire Caste.

What a Pathfinder Team does

Pathfinders push out ahead of the main T’au force, staying hidden while they scout enemy positions. They report back using encrypted, hard-to-detect systems like Positional Relays and homing beacons, so the Cadre knows what it’s walking into before contact.

They’re also used as aggressive patrols, holding a wide perimeter around a stationary Hunter Cadre and picking off anything that tries to slip through. Occasionally a whole Cadre of Pathfinders gets its own mission, like surveying a new planet to see if it’s worth colonising.

Gear and the Markerlight

Every Pathfinder wears Recon Armour and carries a Markerlight, a laser designator mounted on their weapon. It paints an almost invisible beam onto a target and feeds precise targeting data to support units.

That data guides the fire of platforms like Hammerhead gunships, and when it’s tied to Seeker Missiles the Pathfinders can stay hidden and still drop devastating, accurate fire on the target. Imperial troops have learned to dread the small red dot, sometimes calling it the “Valkyrie’s Mark.”

  • Recon Armour for stealth and mobility in the field
  • Markerlight laser designator on their firearm
  • Networked to tanks, gunships, and Seeker Missile racks
  • Devilfish transports fitted with a larger Marker Beacon variant

Why they matter

Pathfinders are the T’au military’s eyes. Without them, the Empire’s long-range firepower loses its accuracy, and the Markerlight network that makes T’au shooting so lethal goes dark.

The cost is brutal. Pathfinders operate for long stretches behind enemy lines, isolated from the rest of their force, and they have the highest mortality rate in the Fire Caste. During the early days of the Great War of Confederation, casualty rates hit 84% or higher. Even so, Fire Caste academies are full of volunteers who want the job.

Notable Pathfinders and Tetras

Pathfinder Shas’ui Mor’kami is often quoted on the team’s ethos: they’re first to sight the enemy, first to engage, and last to leave, and they accept death in service of the Greater Good.

Pathfinders also ride into battle on Tetra scout speeders, fast skimmer craft built for the same forward-observer role. They extend the team’s reach and keep the Markerlight network moving.

FAQ

What is a Markerlight?

It’s a laser designator carried by Pathfinders and other T’au units. It paints a target with an almost invisible beam and sends targeting data to friendly support weapons, letting them fire with deadly accuracy.

Why do Pathfinders have such high casualty rates?

They spend long periods ahead of the main force, often behind enemy lines and cut off from support. That isolation makes them vulnerable, and during the Great War of Confederation their casualty rates topped 84%.

What’s the “Valkyrie’s Mark”?

It’s an Imperial nickname for the small red dot a Markerlight leaves on a target. Troops who see it know a guided T’au strike is incoming.
