Vespid Stingwings

Vespid Stingwings are an insectoid alien race that fights for the T’au Empire, known to the Imperium as Stingwings and to the T’au as Mal’Kor. They’re fast, tough, and they control their gear with sound, which makes them one of the strangest and most useful auxiliaries in the T’au roster.

What they are

The Vespid come from a world called Vespid and they’re a bipedal, vaguely insectoid species. They’re a bit taller than a human and noticeably quicker, thanks to wing-like chitin growths on their backs.

Those wings shouldn’t work by Imperial aerodynamic standards, but they do. They also emit an ultrasonic tone, which is how the Vespid control and tune their technology.

How they joined the T’au

The Vespid were already technologically capable when T’au Water Caste diplomats reached them. Talks went nowhere at first, because the Vespid mindset was so different from anything the T’au could grasp.

Then the Ethereals handed over a custom communication headset, and the Vespid abruptly became fully compliant, accepting annexation without a fuss. Nobody’s ever explained why, and rumours about what the headsets actually do have followed the T’au ever since.

Biology and senses

  • Chitinous, barbed exoskeleton that’s sturdy and hard to crack.
  • Three pairs of eyes: one for ultraviolet, one for normal human-visible light, one for infrared.
  • Strong radiation resistance and the ability to digest almost any organic matter, so they’re easy to feed in the field.
  • A natural stinger on the abdomen. Imperial propaganda calls it vestigial; some strains prove otherwise, and it’s venomous.

Strains and tech

Vespid aren’t one uniform look. Chitin colour and patterning vary between the many Vespid nations, and those differences are split into distinct strains. Some strains are famous for especially pronounced physical traits.

Their gear runs on the same ultrasonic principle as their wings, which is why Vespid technology looks and behaves unlike anything else in the T’au arsenal.

Why they matter

Stingwings give the T’au a fast, resilient close-range unit that doesn’t rely on battlesuits or Fire Caste doctrine. They’re a rare window into how the Empire treats alien allies, and the headset story is one of the setting’s best quiet horror beats.

They also show up in wider Imperial records, including fights against Tempestus Aquilons, so they’re more than a T’au-only footnote.

  • Their wings emit ultrasound, which they use to control their technology.
  • Their chitin colour and patterning vary by strain and nation.
  • They’re radiation-resistant and can digest almost any organic matter.

FAQ

What are Vespid Stingwings?

They’re an insectoid alien species allied with the T’au Empire. The Imperium calls them Stingwings, the T’au call them Mal’Kor, and they fight as fast auxiliary troops.

Why did the Vespid join the T’au so suddenly?

Diplomacy was failing until the Ethereals gave them communication headsets, after which they became fully compliant. What the headsets really do has never been confirmed, and it’s a running rumour in the lore.

Do Vespid stingers actually work?

Imperial sources claim they’re vestigial, but other strains have shown venomous stingers in action. Some Vespid seem reluctant to use them, though they’re lethal when they do.
