The Refractor Field

The refractor field is a personal energy shield that wraps its wearer in a thin bubble of force. When a shot or blade hits, the field spreads that energy across its whole surface instead of letting it punch through in one spot. It’s one of the Imperium’s more common protective devices, though ‘common’ is relative when you’re talking about arcane tech.

What the refractor field actually does

A refractor field generator is a small device, sometimes hidden inside jewellery, that projects a protective bubble around the user. Its trick is dispersion: instead of blocking a hit outright, it scatters the incoming energy over the entire area of the field. That’s how a refractor field can soak up lascannon and plasma hits that would otherwise turn a person into vapour.

It isn’t perfect. Compared to the conversion field, which does something similar but better, the refractor field is less reliable. It also gives you away. Triggering it produces a bright flash, so any hope of staying stealthy goes out the window. In low light, an active field glows obviously, and some units hum or buzz while running. They can also be surprisingly heavy.

Who gets one

Refractor fields are uncommon, since building one takes rare resources and a lot of arcane know-how. In the Imperial Guard, they’re mostly seen on officers and enginseers rather than rank-and-file troopers. The Adeptus Custodes keep them in their armoury as standard kit, which tells you something about the tier of protection we’re talking about.

The White Scars field them too, including on the Souldrinkers, a close-combat unit built around them. There’s also a rarer cousin called the Reductor Field, which doesn’t try to stop a projectile at all. Instead it cushions the impact until the hit stops mattering. Commissar Yarrick wears one of those.

Variants and relics

Like most Imperial wargear, refractor fields come in grades. You’ll see battle-hardened, sanctified, master-crafted and artificer versions, each a step up in quality or rarity. There’s also a named relic, the Refractor Field Generator of the Militarum Tempestus, gifted to the 133rd Lambdan Lions by the Adeptus Mechanicus after the regiment cleansed Lurea IX of a Genestealer infestation.

Key facts

  • The refractor field disperses an incoming hit’s energy across the whole field rather than blocking it at one point.
  • It can stop lascannon and plasma hits, but it’s less reliable than a conversion field.
  • Activating it creates a bright flash, so it ruins stealth and glows in low light.
  • Imperial Guard officers and enginseers use them; the Adeptus Custodes and White Scars field them too.
  • The Reductor Field is a rarer variant that cushions impacts instead of stopping them.

FAQ

Is a refractor field better than a conversion field?

No. The conversion field is the superior version of the same idea. A refractor field is less reliable, though it’s still strong enough to stop lascannon and plasma hits.

Does a refractor field make you invisible?

The opposite. It flares brightly when it triggers, and it glows in low light, so you can’t stay hidden while it’s active.

Who can wear a refractor field?

In the Imperial Guard it’s mostly officers and enginseers. The Adeptus Custodes use them widely, and the White Scars equip some units with them.
