The Adeptus Custodes are the Emperor’s own bodyguard, a small army of gene-forged champions who guard the Imperial Palace and the Golden Throne on Terra. They outclass Space Marines the way Space Marines outclass ordinary guardsmen, and almost nobody gets past them without permission.
What the Adeptus Custodes actually are
They started out as the Legio Custodes, the first genetically and psychologically altered warriors to fight for the Emperor during the Unification Wars on Terra. Back then they were his personal guard, drawn from the children of Terran nobility.
These days they’re the guardians of the Imperial Palace and the Golden Throne, and they decide who’s allowed into the Emperor’s throne room, and when. That authority is real: Space Marines and even Inquisitors kneel before them.
Alongside the Sisters of Silence, they make up the Talons of the Emperor, with the Custodes as the right hand and the Sisters as the left.
Why they matter
The Custodes are the ceiling of human martial potential in the setting. To a Custodian, a Space Marine is what a guardsman is to a Space Marine, an elite but ultimately lesser tier of warrior.
For most of their history they barely left Terra, let alone the Palace, so their presence anywhere else signals something serious. When the Custodes deploy in force, the situation has usually gone very wrong.
They also sit close to the heart of Imperial power. Their headquarters is the Tower of Hegemon on Terra, and they answer to the Adeptus Terra and the Imperial Household rather than the Adeptus Astartes chain of command.
How they’re organised
The current Captain-General is Trajann Valoris, the top-ranking Custodian and the one who speaks for the Ten Thousand.
Below him the organisation splits into ranks, titles, castes and operational units, with their own fighting styles known as Martial Ka’tah. Recruitment and biology are kept deliberately obscure compared to the Space Marines’ well-documented gene-seed process.
- Leader: Captain-General Trajann Valoris
- Headquarters: the Tower of Hegemon, Terra
- Parent bodies: Adeptus Terra and the Imperial Household
- Founded during the Unification Wars era
- Also called the Ten Thousand, the Watchers of the Throne, and the Golden Legion
Gear and appearance
Custodians wear auramite, a gold-coloured armour that’s a step beyond what most Imperial forces get to use, and they carry individually crafted weapons rather than mass-produced kit.
Their look is one of the most recognisable in the range, and it’s tied directly to their role: gleaming, ceremonial, and unmistakably the Emperor’s own. They also maintain their own fleet and vehicles, so they can move as a self-contained force when they need to.
How they connect to the wider lore
The Custodes are bound up with the Horus Heresy, the Great Crusade, and the Era Indomitus, so they show up across most major Imperial storylines. They’re also the natural counterpart to the Sisters of Silence, and their relationship with the Space Marines and the Inquisition is one of careful, formal distance.
There’s a Chaos Custodes entry in the lore too, a reminder that even the Emperor’s own aren’t entirely beyond corruption in the darker corners of the setting. Sources differ on some of the finer details of their history and organisation, so treat the specifics as a moving target.

FAQ
Are the Adeptus Custodes stronger than Space Marines?
Yes. The lore consistently places them a tier above Space Marines, roughly the way Space Marines sit above ordinary guardsmen. They’re gene-alchemised, individually equipped, and trained to a standard the Astartes don’t reach.
Who leads the Adeptus Custodes?
Captain-General Trajann Valoris is the current leader. The role sits at the top of the Custodes hierarchy and carries huge authority within the Imperial Palace.
Where are the Adeptus Custodes based?
Their headquarters is the Tower of Hegemon on Terra. Because the Imperial Palace is so vast, they operate as a defensive army rather than a mobile crusading force.
What are the Sisters of Silence to the Custodes?
Together they form the Talons of the Emperor, with the Custodes as the right hand and the Sisters of Silence as the left. They’re designed to fight alongside each other.
