The Runic Armour is a rare suit of Space Wolves power armour built to shrug off psychic attacks. It’s one of the Chapter’s strangest and most treasured pieces of wargear, and it’s wrapped up in Fenrisian belief as much as technology.
What the runic armour actually is
It’s a specialised pattern of Space Marine power armour used by the Space Wolves, sometimes called Æther-rune Armour. Its whole point is defence against the warp: the suit shields the wearer from psychic powers aimed at them.
The suits are ancient, hand-built relics rather than standard issue. They’re kept alive by the Iron Priests, who maintain the old plating and systems, and then finished with protective runes carved by the Rune Priests of Fenris.
How it protects the wearer
Under the hood, the armour carries psycho-ætheric induction circuitry woven through the plating. It acts like a loadstone, soaking up and negating psychic force directed at the wearer.
The Space Wolves themselves see it differently. To them, the rune patterns the circuitry forms are the real protection, armouring the warrior’s soul as much as his body. Imperial observers have called that superstition, pointing to the technology underneath, which nobody fully understands.
- Absorbs and negates incoming psychic attacks
- Maintained by the Iron Priests, inscribed by the Rune Priests
- Extremely rare, with each suit treated as an irreplaceable relic
Where it comes from
The armour dates back to the Great Crusade. The Space Wolves Legion produced a small number of heavily customised artificer suits fitted with that induction circuitry, though the exact pattern and materials used have been lost.
Production was always tiny, limited to what the Legion could make itself. That scarcity is why the suits surviving into the modern era are so prized, and why the Chapter works so hard to keep them in the field.
Don’t confuse it with Eldar Rune Armour
There’s a separate piece of wargear with a very similar name: the Eldar Rune Armour. That one is Aeldari wraithbone armour, psychically moulded to its wearer and worn only by Farseers and Warlocks.
It works on the same general idea, psychic energy deflecting shots before they land, and it’s strong enough to turn aside lascannons and plasma weapons. But it’s a different faction’s technology entirely, so keep the two straight when you’re reading up on either.
| Armour | Faction | Worn by | Key trait |
|---|---|---|---|
| Runic Armour | Space Wolves | Space Marines | Negates psychic attacks |
| Rune Armour | Aeldari | Farseers, Warlocks | Wraithbone, deflects shots |
