Nocturne is the home world of the Salamanders Space Marine Chapter, a volcanic death world in Ultima Segmentum where survival itself is a trial. Its people are ashen-skinned, its cities are fortresses, and its culture shaped one of the Imperium’s most humane Chapters.
What Nocturne is
Nocturne is a death world and Adeptus Astartes home world in the Ultima Segmentum, classified Aptus Non for tithe purposes, meaning it pays no Imperial tithe. It’s been the Salamanders’ base since the Great Crusade, when the primarch Vulkan was found there.
Humanity settled Nocturne during the Dark Age of Technology. The planet’s harsh conditions bred a hardy, stubborn people who never tried to tame their world, because they believed the struggle made them stronger. That belief became the Promethean Cult.
Geography and the time of trial
Nocturne is a binary planetary system with an oversized moon, Prometheus, that orbits erratically and causes massive tectonic stress. The result is constant earthquakes, vast volcano chains, and regular destruction of whatever gets built.
Heavy stellar radiation gives most life on Nocturne a dark, obsidian-like look, including its people. The volcanic activity also churns up rare gems and minerals the Adeptus Mechanicus values highly.
Every fifteen years or so, Nocturne enters a period called the Time of Trial. The planet’s volcanism spikes, and the population shelters in seven sanctuary cities built to withstand the fire.
- Themis, the City of Warrior Kings
- Epimethus, the Jewel City
- Heliosa, the Beacon City
- Aethonian, the Fire Spike
- Clymene, the Merchant Sprawl
- Hesiod, Seat of the Tribal Kings
- Skarokk, the Dragonspine
Notable features
Mount Deathfire is the most famous landmark, a massive volcano tied to Salamanders ritual. Other named regions include the Pyre Desert, the Acerbian Sea, the Scorian Plane, the Cindara Plateau, the Arridian Plain, the T’harken Delta, and the Gey’sarr Ocean.
Nocturne’s moon Prometheus is more than a satellite. It hosts a Salamanders recruiting and training facility, and it’s come under attack alongside the planet more than once.
Attacks and why it matters
Nocturne has been invaded repeatedly. During the Horus Heresy the Death Guard attacked it. In 761.M41 daemon engines struck the Great Crucible, prompting the Chapter Master to open his master reliquaries. In 975.M41 the Dragon Warriors hit both Nocturne and Prometheus.
The world matters because it explains the Salamanders. Their self-reliance, their smithing, their protectiveness toward civilians, all come from Nocturne’s culture and the Promethean Cult. It’s more than a backdrop, it’s the reason the Chapter fights the way it does.
