Prometheus is the moon of Nocturne and the fortress-monastery of the Salamanders. It’s also counted among the Forge Worlds of the Adeptus Mechanicus, which is why fans often call it the prometheus forge world. It matters because it’s the Chapter’s command hub, its main armoury, and the anchor for its fleet.
What prometheus actually is
Prometheus is an oversized moon orbiting Nocturne in the Ultima Segmentum. It’s the only structure on the moon: the Salamanders’ fortress-monastery, which handles the Chapter’s logistics and administration.
Its mass pulls hard on Nocturne’s tectonic plates. Every Nocturne year (about 15 Terran years) that stress triggers the Time of Trials, when the planet’s volcanoes erupt and the seas surge. That cycle shapes Salamanders recruitment and culture.
Because it’s a moon rather than a planet, Prometheus doesn’t pay a standard tithe. Its grade is Aptus Non, meaning it’s exempt from the usual Imperial levy.
The Pantheon and how the Chapter is run
Command sits in the Pantheon, a council of 18 seats, one for each of the old Legion’s numbers. The Chapter Master holds the seat of the Regent of Prometheus. Six seats go to Company Captains, and four more cover the Apothecarion, Librarius, Chaplaincy, and Fleet.
Three seats belong to the Armoury and the Masters of the Forge. Three are kept for invited guests, and the last is reserved for the Forgefather, the Chapter’s most mysterious office. The Hall of Relics sits here too, packed with shrines to heroes like Xavier, T’kell, and the firedrake Kesare.
- 1 seat: Regent of Prometheus (Chapter Master)
- 6 seats: Company Captains
- 4 seats: Apothecarion, Librarius, Chaplaincy, Fleet
- 3 seats: Armoury and Masters of the Forge
- 3 seats: invited guests
- 1 seat: the Forgefather
Fleet, relics, and who’s actually stationed there
Prometheus hosts the Salamanders Fleet and a great dock where Strike Cruisers and Battle Barges are repaired. The Chalice of Fire, a vast forge-ship built by Vulkan, is moored here and supplies most of the Chapter’s weaponry.
Most Salamanders live down on Nocturne, not on the moon. Only the Firedrakes (1st Company) and the Neophytes stay inside Prometheus, and teleportation points across Nocturne’s surface let the other Companies come up fast. The Teleportarium is big enough to deploy the whole 1st Company in Terminator armour.
Forge World, fortress, or both?
Sources differ on how to label Prometheus. Lexicanum describes it as a moon and Adeptus Astartes fortress-monastery, while the forge world tag comes from the Salamanders’ heavy reliance on its forges, the Chalice of Fire, and the Masters of the Forge who sit on the Pantheon.
The practical answer is that it functions as both. It’s a Space Marine stronghold first, but its industrial output and Mechanicus ties make the prometheus forge world label stick.

FAQ
Is Prometheus a Forge World or a moon?
It’s both in practice. It’s the moon of Nocturne and the Salamanders’ fortress-monastery, but its forges, forge-ship, and Mechanicus links mean it’s often called a Forge World.
What is the Time of Trials?
It’s the cycle every Nocturne year (roughly 15 Terran years) when Prometheus’s gravity stresses Nocturne’s plates, causing eruptions and tidal surges. It’s central to Salamanders recruitment.
Who lives on Prometheus?
Mostly the Firedrakes and the Neophytes. The rest of the Chapter is spread across Nocturne and reaches the moon through teleportation points.
