The Sons of Medusa

The Sons of Medusa are a fleet-based Space Marine chapter descended from the Iron Hands. What makes them unusual is that they were never formally founded in the normal way. They came into being as a breakaway faction of their parent chapter during the Moirae Schism, and only later got official recognition from the High Lords of Terra.

Who they are and why it matters

They share a lot with the Iron Hands: a distrust of weakness, a heavy reliance on technology and wargear, and a cold, pragmatic way of war. Their battle cry is “Purge the weak.”

Why they matter comes down to their origin. They’re one of the rare chapters that exists because of a schism inside another chapter, not because of a normal Founding. That makes them a useful case study in how the Imperium handled internal religious and doctrinal conflict.

Origins: the Moirae Schism

Their story starts with the Moirae Schism, a doctrinal crisis that hit the Adeptus Mechanicus and the Imperial factions tied to it during the Nova Terra Interregnum. The Iron Hands nearly tore themselves apart in a chapter war over it.

The Great Clan Council settled things by exiling the dissidents. All sides swore never to fight each other again. Almost a third of the chapter left, becoming a fleet-based divergent branch known as the Moirae Iron Hands.

They grew over time, taking in Moirae dissidents from other Iron Hands successors as well as normal recruits. By the end of the schism, they were roughly chapter-strength.

Becoming an official chapter

When the High Lords of Terra were restored during the Age of Redemption, they scrutinised the Moirae Iron Hands. The verdict was loyal and pure. A special edict ratified their right to exist as a chapter in their own right.

They were renamed the Sons of Medusa and given new heraldry. Some in the Adeptus Mechanicus and other chapters weren’t happy about it, and they’ve been watched warily ever since.

Their first official campaign was the Great Cull, wiping out elements of the Imperium deemed wanting. They performed well above expectations.

  • Parent chapter: Iron Hands
  • Ratified by edict 011.M37
  • No known successor chapters
  • Led by a triumvirate council of Iron Thanes rather than a single Chapter Master
  • Fleet-based, with three primary independent battle groups
  • Fortress-monastery: an asteroid network in the Taelus System

Colours and organisation

Their armour is green, with a black or white aquila and a white helmet. Sources vary slightly on the exact trim, which is common for chapters with a long and messy history.

Organisationally they mirror the Iron Hands in spirit: council-led, tech-focused, and built around independent battle groups rather than a single homeworld.
