Terra

Terra is Earth, billions of years later. It’s the birthplace of humanity, the throneworld of the Emperor, and the single most important planet in the Imperium. If you want to understand 40k, you start here.

What Terra actually is

Terra sits in the Sol System, inside Segmentum Solar, and it’s classed as a hive world. It’s the capital of the Imperium and the spiritual centre of the Imperial Creed, which makes it the most revered place in human space.

Its population figures in the sources range wildly, from around 200 billion up to quadrillions depending on the edition. Either way, it’s a planet buried under its own cities.

Pilgrims travel from across the galaxy to see it. Even the bare ground they walk on is treated as holy, which tells you how the Imperium feels about this place. It’s essentially a temple the size of a world.

Why it matters

Terra is where the Emperor sits, entombed on the Golden Throne. That alone makes it the anchor of the entire Imperium, politically and religiously.

It’s also the administrative brain. The Adeptus Terra, the Administratum, and the Departmento Munitorum all have their headquarters here, so the orders that move armies and fleets across a million worlds originate on this one planet.

And it’s dangerous in a way that has nothing to do with xenos. As one Wolfblade puts it, Terra is where the Imperium’s most ruthless and ambitious people gather, and they won’t let anyone stand in their way. The politics are lethal.

A short history

The Age of Terra covers human history from its beginnings up to the Dark Age of Technology. Legend says the Emperor walked among humanity even then, ruling as a king alongside a Warmaster named Oll Persson.

During the Dark Age of Technology, humanity left the Sol System using warp drives and spread across the galaxy. Terra was the heart of that early empire, and it got along peacefully with its first colony, Mars.

Then came Old Night, the Age of Strife, and the Unification Wars that pulled Terra back together. After that, the Imperium was born, and Terra became its capital for good.

EraWhat happened
Age of TerraEarly human history, legendary cities and nations, first space travel
Dark Age of TechnologyWarp drives let humanity colonise the galaxy; Terra and Mars coexist
Old Night / Age of StrifeHumanity’s collapse, followed by the Unification Wars
Age of the ImperiumTerra becomes the capital of the Imperium and the Emperor’s resting place

How it connects to the rest of the lore

Mars is Terra’s oldest partner, and the Mechanicum’s forge world sits right next door in the same system. That relationship shapes the Imperium’s tech and its politics.

Terra is also the endpoint of the Astronomican, the psychic beacon that lets Imperial ships navigate the warp. Without it, interstellar travel falls apart.

And every major Imperial institution traces back here, so when you read about the Administratum, the Inquisition, or the Custodes, you’re reading about organisations rooted on Terra.

FAQ

Is Terra just Earth?

Yes. Terra is Earth in the far future, and older sources call it exactly that. It’s the same planet, just buried under tens of thousands of years of history and city.

How many people live on Terra?

Sources disagree. Figures range from around 200 billion up to quadrillions, depending on which edition you’re reading. Either way, it’s unimaginably crowded.

Why is Terra so important in Warhammer 40k?

It’s humanity’s homeworld, the Emperor’s resting place, and the headquarters of the Imperium’s biggest institutions. It’s also the most holy site in the Imperial Creed.
