Titans

Titans are the biggest, most destructive war machines in Warhammer 40k. These towering god-engines can level armies and only another Titan can truly match one.

What titans are

Titans are humanoid war-machines built by the Adeptus Mechanicus. The largest stand over a hundred feet tall, and their footsteps shake the ground. They’re so powerful that some cultures worship them as god-engines.

The Imperium’s Titans belong to the Collegia Titanica, a branch of the Mechanicus. They’re rare, slow to deploy, and saved for the biggest fights. When one shows up, the battle changes.

  • Height: some classes reach 100 feet or more
  • Only another Titan can reliably fight one
  • Built and maintained by the Adeptus Mechanicus

How a titan works

A Titan isn’t a tank with a bigger gun. It’s a mind-linked war machine. The Princeps, the commander, plugs into the Titan’s Machine Spirit through a Mind Impulse Unit. They think, and the Titan moves.

That link goes both ways. The Princeps feels the Titan’s pain when it’s damaged and its triumph in victory. Over centuries, the bond can grow so deep that the Princeps becomes physically integrated into the machine, unable to leave until death.

A crew supports the Princeps: Moderati handle weapons, a Tactical Officer coordinates, and engineers keep the whole thing running. Servitors handle the dirty work. The Princeps can take direct control of any system, but usually leaves gunnery to the Moderati.

Titan classes

Titans come in three broad tiers. Scout Titans are the smallest and fastest, used for reconnaissance and flanking. Battle Titans are the main line, built to break enemy formations. Emperor Titans are the rarest and most devastating, reserved for the most critical wars.

The Warlord is the most famous Battle Titan. It carries a belicosa volcano cannon that can wound another Warlord on a 2+, and an arioch power claw that deals massive damage in melee. It has 100 Wounds and Toughness 16 in the game, making it the toughest unit in Warhammer 40k.

  • Scout Titans: light, fast, reconnaissance
  • Battle Titans: main combat line, e.g. Warlord
  • Emperor Titans: largest and rarest, reserved for apocalyptic battles

Other factions’ titans

The Imperium doesn’t have a monopoly on god-engines. The Aeldari field Phantom Titans, which trade brute force for speed and grace. They dance between enemy troops and snipe vehicles from miles away.

Tyranids spawn the Hierophant, a bio-titan that strides over walls and spits bio-acid. Orks build their own ramshackle Titans, and even Chaos forces field corrupted god-machines. Every major faction has an answer to Titans, or a Titan of its own.
