Titans are the Imperium’s walking war engines, humanoid god-machines built by the Adeptus Mechanicus and commanded by a Princeps who links his mind directly to the machine. Nothing on the ground matches them except another Titan, and their arrival usually ends the argument.
What a Titan actually is
Titans belong to the Collegia Titanica, the Titan legions of the Adeptus Mechanicus. They’re mechanical, humanoid war-machines, and the biggest classes stand around a hundred feet tall, with some sources stretching that to a hundred metres.
Their presence is meant to break armies before the shooting even starts. Few forces can stand against a Titan, and only another Titan can equal one.
Who’s inside
Every Titan needs a crew, more than a pilot. A single Princeps commands, backed up by Moderati, a tactical officer, a chief engineer, an engineering team and servitors. Exactly how many depends on the class.
- The Princeps links to the Titan’s Machine Spirit through a Mind Impulse Unit, so the machine becomes an extension of him.
- He feels its damage as pain and its victories as elation, and his mental health degrades when he’s separated from it.
- Moderati run the weapons under the Princeps’s direction, while he handles defence systems like void shields.
- Titans still need both Princeps and crew to function, no matter how strong the link gets.
Classes and how they’re used
Titans come in a spread of classes, usually grouped into scout Titans, battle Titans and the massive Emperor Titans. Traitor legions field their own variants of several classes.
On the battlefield they’re line-breakers and siege engines, not skirmishers. A Titan walks through defences that would stop conventional armour, and the threat of one is often enough to force an enemy to commit everything they have.
The risk of the link
The Princeps’s connection to the Machine Spirit is close to what a Space Marine has with a Dreadnought, but Titan Machine Spirits grow minds of their own over centuries.
In the worst cases the bond becomes permanent and physical. The Princeps ends up integrated into the Titan and can’t be removed until he dies. Catastrophic damage to the Mind Impulse Unit is just as bad, sending a surge of feedback straight into his mind.

- A Princeps commands via a Mind Impulse Unit, assisted by Moderati, officers, engineers and servitors.
- The Princeps feels the Titan’s pain and elation, and can end up permanently fused into the machine.
- Classes are grouped into scout, battle and Emperor Titans, with traitor variants in use.

FAQ
Who commands a Titan?
A single Princeps commands, supported by Moderati, a tactical officer, engineers and servitors. The Princeps is mind-linked to the Titan, but the crew is still essential.
How tall is a Titan?
It depends on the class. Sources put the largest at roughly a hundred feet, with some going as far as a hundred metres.
What can fight a Titan?
Realistically, only another Titan. That’s why Titan legions are treated as a decisive weapon rather than just heavy support.
