Eldrad Ulthran

Eldrad Ulthran is the chief farseer of Craftworld Ulthwé and one of the oldest living Aeldari in the galaxy. He’s a master manipulator and the most powerful farseer the Eldar have ever produced, and his visions have saved his people more times than anyone can count.

Who he is

Eldrad’s name translates roughly to “First of Ulthwé,” and he’s led that craftworld since the Fall of the Eldar. He was born before the Fall, making him over ten thousand years old, and he’s spent most of that time steering Ulthwé and the wider Aeldari race away from extinction.

His foresight is considered the most accurate and powerful of any farseer. He’s broken Titans, boiled daemons’ blood in their veins, and killed kings and heroes beyond counting. Since the 13th Black Crusade he’s been counted among the Legendary Heroes, his name shorthand for wisdom and self-sacrifice.

Ulthwé and the Eye of Terror

It’s Eldrad’s decision that keeps Ulthwé parked dangerously close to the Eye of Terror, watching for Chaos incursions. He saw the Great Devourer coming before it ever entered the galaxy, and he’s personally pulled Aeldari survivors out of danger more than a hundred times.

His psychic gift has faded over the millennia, though. These days he leans on the dead seers of Ulthwé, either in the Dome of Crystal Seers or through the spirit stones of the first Seer Council, which are bound inside his Staff of Ulthamar.

The Horus Heresy and after

Eldrad foresaw the Age of Darkness and tried to stop it. He was the first to warn the Imperium that Horus would betray them, meeting Fulgrim on the Maiden World of Tarsus. It went badly: Fulgrim was already corrupted by Slaanesh, and he virus-bombed the world, killing Eldrad’s advisor, the Wraithlord Khiraen Goldhelm. That’s where his distrust of humanity took root.

He later appeared to the Cabal agent John Grammaticus and told him he opposed the Cabal’s plans. He’s intervened in human affairs repeatedly since, from the War of the Beast to the Armageddon Wars.

Recent history and the Ynnari

Eldrad was briefly exiled from Ulthwé at one point, though he’s back in charge now. During the 13th Black Crusade he played a major role, and he later helped awaken Ynnead, the Aeldari god of the dead. He was affiliated with the Ynnari for a time, though sources differ on whether that’s still the case.

He’s a legendary hero in the tabletop game, and his staff, the Staff of Ulthamar, is one of the most recognisable relics in Eldar lore.
