Armageddon is a hive world in the Imperium, and its name has become shorthand for war on a scale that’s hard to picture. Orks know it as Armour-Geddem, and it’s been the setting for some of the biggest battles in Imperial history.
What and where it is
Armageddon sits in the Armageddon System, inside the Armageddon Subsector and Sector, in the Segmentum Solar. It’s the system’s fourth planet, a hive world with a population around 55 billion, and its tithe grade started at Exactis Extremis before being reduced to Solutio Tertius.
For the Orks, the world has a different name: Armour-Geddem. That’s more than a nickname. It hints at why they keep coming back.
- Class: Hive World
- Affiliation: Imperium
- Segmentum: Solar
- Population: roughly 55 billion
- Tithe: Exactis Extremis, later Solutio Tertius
The secret origin
Here’s the part most people in the Imperium don’t know. Armageddon was originally Ullanor, the world made famous by the Ullanor Crusade in the Emperor’s time.
About 1,500 years after the Horus Heresy, during the War of the Beast, Ullanor became the Beast’s capital. The Mechanicum was thought to have destroyed it. In truth, they teleported the whole planet into the Armageddon System. That secret stayed buried for a very long time.
The wars
The First War for Armageddon is the one nobody talks about, and there’s a reason. In 444.M41, Khorne cultists rebelled during a Warp storm. A Space Hulk called the Devourer of Stars arrived, carrying Angron, the Daemon Primarch of the World Eaters. The Space Wolves and Grey Knights turned up, the Grey Knights banished Angron, and the cultists were crushed.
The aftermath was grim. To keep the daemon and the Grey Knights secret, the entire population and all surviving soldiers were rounded up, sterilized, and sent to work camps for life. A new population was brought in to resettle the planet.
The Second and Third Wars for Armageddon followed, both against massive Ork invasions. The Third is the one most fans know best, with Commissar Yarrick and Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka becoming central figures. There’s also a Season of Blood and a Fourth War for Armageddon in the lore.
How it fits into the wider lore
Armageddon matters because it ties together threads from across 40k: the War of the Beast, the Horus Heresy’s aftermath, the Grey Knights’ secrecy, and the Ork threat. It’s also a rare case where a planet’s true history is a state secret.
Its name is used as a byword for war and destruction on a massive scale, and the quote from Lord Commander Solar Eugenian sums it up: the fate of a thousand worlds hangs in the balance there.
