Ephrael Stern is a Sister of Battle who came back from the dead twice and carries the combined power of 700 martyred sisters inside her. That makes her one of the Imperium’s strangest weapons, and one it can’t decide whether to use or destroy.
Who is Ephrael Stern?
She’s a Seraphim of the Order of Our Martyred Lady, raised at the Saint Sabbat Schola Progenium on Antigone’s Harbour after being promised to the Sororitas before birth. She rose fast: full Seraphim, then Sister Superior, all inside a few years.
Her titles tell the story better than any service record. The Thrice-Born, because she’s died and come back twice. The Daemonifuge, because she’s a living weapon against Chaos. And the Heretic Saint, which is what happens when the Inquisition can’t work out which of the other two you are.
The Screaming Cage
Everything unusual about Stern traces back to Parnis. A convent of the Orders Pronatus had been studying a captive daemon, and it turned them into the Screaming Cage: 700 sisters fused together, sharing one endless torment.
When Stern fell in battle there, untainted by Chaos, those 700 souls saw a way out. They poured everything they had into her, healing her wounds, sharpening her reflexes, and stuffing their knowledge of daemon-fighting into her head. She walked away the only survivor, and not entirely sane.
The work wasn’t finished. Over the years that followed, the sisters in the Cage kept feeding her the rest, until the full picture of how to fight Chaos was hers.
Deaths, hunts, and the long road back
The Convent Prioris on Ophelia VII locked her in a cell for four years while theologians argued about what she’d become. A daemon-possessed sister tried to kill her before they decided. Stern killed her with her bare hands.
Inquisitor Silas Hand took over the investigation and died stopping the daemon Asteroth, leaving Stern the sole survivor of yet another expedition. The Ordo Malleus has hunted her ever since, and so has Ahriman of the Thousand Sons, who wanted her secrets badly enough that she stabbed herself through the heart to escape him.
That was death number two. She was buried, and then the gift from her fallen sisters brought her back, a light of the warp that isn’t of the warp.
Where she fits in the wider lore
Stern sits at the intersection of three big 40k threads: the Adepta Sororitas and their martyrdom, the Inquisition’s paranoia about anything it can’t classify, and the warp’s habit of producing things the Imperium would rather not think about.
She’s also one of the few characters to cross from the old Black Library comics into modern 40k novels. She reappears during the Indomitus Crusade, in Imperium Nihilus and around the Pariah Nexus, which is rare for a character with roots that deep in the 1990s.
Her original appearance was a 1999 Warhammer Warriors tie-in book by Rick Priestley, part of a short-lived series of combat game supplements.

FAQ
Why is Ephrael Stern called the Daemonifuge?
Because she’s been turned into a living weapon against Chaos. The 700 souls of the Screaming Cage poured their knowledge of fighting daemons into her, and she’s been hunted by both the Ordo Malleus and Chaos ever since.
What does Thrice-Born mean?
She’s died and returned twice. The first death was at Parnis, where the Screaming Cage revived her. The second was her own doing, killing herself to escape Ahriman, after which the same gift brought her back again.
Is Ephrael Stern a saint or a heretic?
The Imperium hasn’t settled it. She’s called the Heretic Saint, and the Inquisition has spent years trying to work out whether she’s a miracle or something that needs purging. Both labels have been applied to her at different points.
