The Adepta Sororitas, also called the Sisters of Battle, are the Imperium’s all-female warrior sisterhood. They’re the armed wing of the Ecclesiarchy, and they fight with bolter and blade in the name of the God-Emperor.
What are the Adepta Sororitas?
They’re a religious military order that serves the Ecclesiarchy, the Imperium’s church. Their most visible branch, the Orders Militant, roots out heresy and corruption across human space.
The name ‘Sisters of Battle’ technically refers only to those fighting orders, though most fans use it for the whole organisation. The Adepta Sororitas also includes non-militant orders that handle medicine, diplomacy, and records.
Where they came from
The Sororitas were officially founded in the 36th millennium during the Age of Apostasy. Their roots go back further, to an all-female cult called the Daughters of the Emperor on the world of San Leor.
That cult caught the eye of the mad High Lord Goge Vandire. He brought them to Terra as his personal bodyguards and renamed them the Brides of the Emperor. When the Imperium rose against him, a Custodian led their leader, Alicia Dominica, to the Golden Throne. What she saw there isn’t recorded, but she walked out and beheaded Vandire on the spot.
After the dust settled, the organisation was reformed into the Adepta Sororitas. The Decree Passive forbids the Ecclesiarchy from keeping ‘men under arms’, so an all-female force was a handy workaround. Six Orders Majoris grew from the teachings of Dominica and her five companions.
How they’re organised
The Orders Militant are the fighting core, but they’re not the whole picture. Other orders serve the church in quieter ways, from healing the sick to smoothing over noble bloodlines.
Overall command falls to Abbess Morvenn Vahl, who leads from Terra and Ophelia VII. The Sisterhood also works closely with the Ordo Hereticus, and Inquisitors often call on them when they need boots on the ground.
| Order type | Role |
|---|---|
| Orders Militant | Frontline combat and wars of faith |
| Orders Hospitaller | Medical care and healing |
| Orders Dialogus | Translation and diplomacy |
| Orders Famulous | Advisors to noble houses |
Why they matter
Faith is a real weapon in the 41st millennium, and the Sororitas embody that better than anyone. They’re the Imperium’s answer to threats that the Astra Militarum can’t handle and the Space Marines won’t always be sent to face.
On the tabletop they mix infantry, tanks, and firepower with a heavy dose of miracle dice and acts of faith. That makes them a mid-range army that rewards aggressive play and a bit of luck.
