Hive Hades

Hive Hades, also called Hades Hive, was a hive city on Armageddon that became one of the most fought-over places in the entire sector. It’s where Commissar Sebastian Yarrick made his name, and where his rivalry with the Ork warlord Ghazghkull began.

What is hive hades?

Hive Hades was a hive city on the Imperial world of Armageddon, located on the eastern continent of Armageddon Secundus. Like most hives, it was a massive urban sprawl, but its real fame comes from the wars fought over it.

It first drew attention during the Second War for Armageddon, when it became the site of a brutal siege that turned the tide of the entire conflict. Later, in the Third War, it was deliberately abandoned and then destroyed from orbit by Ghazghkull’s forces.

The siege of Hades Hive

The Siege of Hades Hive in 941.M41 was one of the largest battles of the Second War for Armageddon. For months, Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka threw his Ork hordes at the hive’s defences, but Commissar Yarrick held out with a stubbornness that became legendary.

The siege didn’t just tie up Ghazghkull’s attention, it also gave the Imperium time to regroup elsewhere. Eventually, a relief force broke through and the Orks were forced to withdraw. Ghazghkull fled Armageddon, and the war collapsed for the Orks soon after.

Yarrick’s leadership during the siege made him a hero, and it started the personal rivalry between him and Ghazghkull that would echo through later wars.

Third War and destruction

By the time of the Third War for Armageddon, Hades was still scarred from the earlier fighting. Yarrick, now a senior commander, argued that the hive should be evacuated rather than defended. Many disagreed, expecting the Orks to attack Hades for revenge.

Yarrick guessed differently. He believed Ghazghkull would target the strongest points of resistance, so a ruined hive like Hades would be ignored or simply obliterated. He was right. Ghazghkull bombarded Hades from orbit with rocket-propelled asteroids, destroying it without committing ground troops.

Because the hive had been evacuated, Imperial losses were minimal. Even so, refugees later returned to the ruins, and the site remained a symbolic battleground. By the end of the campaign, Hades was contested, with the Imperium holding a slim 54% control according to post-war assessments.

Hive Hades in the later wars

Hades continued to feature in later conflicts on Armageddon. During the Season of Blood and the Fourth War for Armageddon, its ruins remained a strategic and symbolic location, though never again the site of a siege on the scale of the original.
