Isstvan Extremis

Isstvan Extremis is the outermost planet of the Isstvan system, a frozen, near-airless world that hosted an Imperial observation and augury station. It matters because Horus’s forces knocked it out before the fighting at Isstvan III really got going, which is one of the first moves of the Horus Heresy.

What Isstvan Extremis actually is

It’s the furthest planet out in the Isstvan system, in the Ultima Segmentum. The place has barely any atmosphere and is brutally cold, cold enough that sound hardly carries and snow sometimes falls as frozen nitrogen.

The Imperium classed it as a dead world and exempted it from tithes (Aptus Non), so there was no real settlement to speak of. What it did have was a station: domes, towers and antennas, ringed by bunkers with lasguns and automatic guns, and held down by massive clamps driven into the surface.

Why Horus attacked it first

When rebellion broke out on Isstvan III, Horus moved his forces into the system. Before hitting Isstvan III itself, he sent troops against the station on Isstvan Extremis because he believed it was a watch post that could see what he was doing.

The Isstvan system records describe Isstvan Extremis as an augury network nexus that went silent before the atrocity on Isstvan III. That’s the short version: it was blinded first so the bigger operation could proceed.

The assault on the station

Elements of the Emperor’s Children and the 7th Company of the Death Guard carried out the attack. The Death Guard were dropped by Thunderhawk behind the planet’s curve so the landing wouldn’t be seen, then crept in from the west under radio silence and waited for hours.

The Emperor’s Children hit the station head-on from the opposite direction as a diversion. Once that was in full swing, Lord Commander Eidolon gave the signal and Battle-Captain Nathaniel Garro ordered the assault. The Death Guard overran the western defenders and bunkers, blew a breach in the wall and pushed inside.

The advance stalled indoors until the Emperor’s Children arrived, then the Death Guard regained the initiative. The defenders wore bulky black void-capable armour with lasguns cabled to backpacks, a large red lens over one eye, and a strange silver pattern matching their black tattoos. What that pattern meant isn’t recorded.

The temple under the main dome

Under the central dome, the two Legions found something nobody expected: a temple shaped like a stepped pyramid. Its blocks were rectangular fragments cut out of all sorts of different buildings and hauled to Isstvan Extremis.

The inside was covered in a confusing pattern of lines and circles that seemed to suggest depth and movement. The sources don’t explain who built it or why, and the account breaks off before saying what the attackers made of it.

How it fits into the wider Isstvan story

Isstvan Extremis is one piece of an eight-planet system that’s otherwise unremarkable and thinly populated, far from Terra. The system’s fame comes entirely from the opening battles of the Horus Heresy: the Battle of Isstvan III and the Drop Site Massacre on Isstvan V.

In the M31 survey lists, Isstvan Extremis is logged simply as the augury nexus that was silenced before Isstvan III. Isstvan V is marked as Target Prioris with a Legiones Astartes execution fleet inbound, which tells you where all of this was heading.
