Sanguinius is the winged Primarch of the Blood Angels, and probably the most loved figure in Imperium history. He’s the golden angel who died fighting Horus to save the Emperor, and that sacrifice still shapes the Blood Angels thousands of years later.
Who sanguinius is
Sanguinius was one of the Emperor’s twenty Primarchs, gene-forged sons scattered through the Warp as infants. He landed on Baal Secundus, a radiation-blasted moon, and was raised by a tribe called the People of the Pure Blood.
He grew impossibly fast, killed a Baalite Fire Scorpion before his tribe even found him, and led his people to victory against the mutant hordes. By the time the Emperor reached Baal, Sanguinius had already made himself a legend.
- Title: The Great Angel

- Born: late M30 on Terra, died 014.M31 aboard the Vengeful Spirit
- Killed by: Horus Lupercal
The wings and the visions
Sanguinius is the only Primarch with angel-like wings. Nobody’s sure if the Emperor designed him that way or if Baal’s radiation mutated him, and the sources genuinely disagree on this point.
He also had psychic ability, especially precognition. He could see the future, which is a gift that got darker and darker as the Horus Heresy closed in.
The Horus Heresy
During the Great Crusade, Sanguinius was both one of the mightiest Primarchs and one of the most humane. His charisma and humility made him beloved across the Imperium.
Horus tried to turn him at Signus Prime, ambushing the Blood Angels with daemons and offering Sanguinius a place at his side. Sanguinius refused, though the campaign cost him and his Legion dearly.
He later served as Imperator Regis of Imperium Secundus, the short-lived successor state Guilliman built when he thought Terra had fallen. Then he made a pilgrimage back to Terra for the final defence.
Death and legacy
Sanguinius died aboard Horus’s flagship, the Vengeful Spirit, during the Siege of Terra in 014.M31. He faced Horus knowing he’d lose, and the sacrifice broke the Warmaster’s defences enough for the Emperor to finish him.
That death left a psychic scar on the Blood Angels that never healed. Their gene-seed carries the Black Rage, a battle-trance where marines relive Sanguinius’s last moments, and the Red Thirst, a craving for blood. In the 41st Millennium he’s still revered as a martyr and a saint.

FAQ
Why does Sanguinius have wings?
Nobody knows for certain. It could be the Emperor’s design or a mutation from Baal’s radiation, and the lore deliberately keeps it ambiguous.
How did Sanguinius die?
Horus Lupercal killed him aboard the Vengeful Spirit during the Siege of Terra in 014.M31. He went into the fight knowing he couldn’t win.
What is the Black Rage?
It’s a flaw in the Blood Angels’ gene-seed that makes marines relive Sanguinius’s death in battle. It’s tied directly to his murder and their Legion’s grief.
