Slaanesh’s Birth

Slaanesh’s birth is the moment the last of the great Chaos Gods came into being, and it happened because the Eldar civilisation collapsed into its own excess. It’s one of the single most important events in 40k history, because it tore a permanent wound in the galaxy and doomed the Eldar forever.

What actually happened

Slaanesh didn’t exist for most of galactic history. The god was born out of the Eldar’s descent into obsessive pleasure-seeking, and their entire civilisation broke apart in the same instant. That collapse is what everyone calls the Fall.

The moment of birth created the Eye of Terror. The warp rift is described as an echo of Slaanesh’s birth-cries, which should tell you how loud a god being born is.

The Eldar who survived did so by fleeing, and they’ve been running from what they left behind ever since. Slaanesh was the last of the major Chaos Gods to appear, arriving after Khorne, Nurgle and Tzeentch were already established.

Why the Eldar call her She Who Thirsts

In the Aeldari language the god is Sai’lanthresh, but the Eldar usually won’t say it out loud. They call her She Who Thirsts instead, because naming her is a good way to get noticed by her.

That hunger is the whole point. Slaanesh feeds on intense sensation of any kind, and Eldar souls are the richest meal going. Every Eldar death is a risk, which is why they use spirit stones and the Infinity Circuit to keep their souls out of her reach.

What Slaanesh is the god of

Slaanesh covers lust and pleasure, but that’s the shallow end. The god’s real domain is excess itself: greed, gluttony, obsession, perfectionism, pain, joy and every appetite that stops being a choice.

The sacred number is six, and the symbol combines the conventional male and female signs. Slaanesh usually appears as a figure that’s female on the right side and male on the left, though the god can take any form and is said to prefer male bodies.

  • Titles include Prince of Chaos, Prince of Excess and Prince of Pleasure
  • Daemons: Keepers of Secrets, Daemonettes, Fiends, Steeds of Slaanesh
  • The Emperor’s Children are the best-known mortal followers
  • Khorne is the classic rival, and the two gods are opposites in almost every way

Names change, the hunger doesn’t

Different cultures see Slaanesh in wildly different ways. The cannibal tribes of Ghoma VI call the god the Feastbringer and picture a canyon-sized slavering maw. The Jorvax experience the name as a painful, discordant noise. The traitor regiments of Toloso know the Cruel Mirror.

The sources make the point plainly: it doesn’t matter what name or shape a mortal gives the god, as long as they fixate and worship. Slaanesh is fed by attention and intensity, not by correct theology.
