Sotha

Sotha is a planet in the Ultima Segmentum that’s famous for two things: it’s the homeworld of the Scythes of the Emperor Space Marine Chapter, and it once housed the Pharos, an ancient xenos device that played a crucial role during the Horus Heresy. These days it’s a dead world, but there are efforts to bring it back to life.

What sotha is and why it matters

Sotha is a world in the Ultima Segmentum, originally a civilised planet that became an Adeptus Astartes homeworld. It’s most famous as the base of the Scythes of the Emperor Chapter, whose fortress-monastery, the Space Station Aegida, orbits the planet.

But Sotha’s real claim to fame is the Pharos, a mysterious alien structure discovered during the Great Crusade. This device became a vital communications beacon for Imperium Secundus during the Horus Heresy, and its story ties directly into some of the biggest events in Warhammer 40k lore.

The Pharos and the Horus Heresy

When the Ultramarines found Sotha around 882.M30, they noticed an ancient structure on Mount Pharos. Roboute Guilliman restricted access to the planet and set up a small agricultural colony to support the archaeological team. The 199th Company was left as a garrison, and they adopted a scythe badge to honour the local farmers who helped clear the land.

During the Horus Heresy, Guilliman sent the Iron Warriors loyalist Barabas Dantioch to unlock the Pharos’s secrets. Dantioch discovered it was an empathic device that could send instant messages across vast distances, and it became a beacon for navigation when the Astronomican was obscured. The Night Lords learned of it and attacked in the Battle of Sotha, hoping to seize the beacon for themselves. The loyalists won, but Dantioch was killed and the Pharos was destroyed.

  • The Pharos was a xenos-built device that allowed instant communication and acted as a navigation beacon.
  • The Battle of Sotha saw 20,000 Night Lords attack 3,000 Ultramarines and their allies.
  • The loyalists held the planet, but the Pharos was destroyed, ending its use.

Sotha after the Heresy

In the aftermath, Sotha continued as the Scythes of the Emperor’s homeworld. By M41, it was the cardinal world of the Sotharan League, a local alliance of planets. But that era ended with the coming of Hive Fleet Kraken during the Second Tyrannic War. The Tyranids devoured Sotha, leaving it a dead world.

The Scythes of the Emperor were nearly wiped out in the defence. Their fortress-monastery, the Aegida, survived in orbit, and the few survivors began the slow task of rebuilding their Chapter. In the Dark Imperium era, there are ongoing efforts to restore Sotha itself, though it remains a shadow of its former self.
