Storm Shield

A storm shield is a powered personal barrier carried by Space Marines, Adeptus Custodes and Ordo Malleus daemonhunters. It’s the bulkiest and most protective shield an infantryman can bear, trading a free hand for the ability to shrug off hits that would kill anyone else.

How it works

The shield has to be gripped in one hand, unlike the smaller combat shield that lets you keep both weapons. That’s the trade-off: you give up an arm, and in return you get a barrier that can hold against a lascannon or even super-heavy weaponry.

A generator in the bearer’s power armour or Terminator armour powers the field. Once it’s active the shield shimmers with blue energy, and when something hits it, it crackles with lightning. That’s where the name comes from.

It works against melee and ranged attacks alike, which is why it’s so often paired with a thunder hammer: shield up to close the distance, hammer down once you’re there. Bearers are slow, but very hard to kill.

Who carries one

You’ll most often see storm shields on Space Marine commanders, Veterans and Sergeants, plus Terminators and the elite of the Adeptus Custodes. Inquisitors and Crusaders of the Ordo Malleus carry them too.

It’s a status symbol as much as a tool. Bearers cover their shields in purity seals, personal heraldry and chapter sigils. Blood Angels favour angelic wings or droplets of blood, Salamanders drape theirs with scales from great reptiles they’ve killed on Nocturne, and the Guardians of the Covenant hang parchment inscribed with chapter lore.

Known patterns

The shield shows up in a lot of variant designs across the Imperium. Some are tied to a single chapter, others got standardised for wider use. Most shields are shaped like the Crux Terminatus.

The Dragonscale pattern is a good example of how these things spread. The Salamanders’ advanced prototypes incorporated a field generator that could stop powerful strikes while staying man-portable, and the design was soon standardised across the entire Imperium.

The Coriolis oddity

Not every pattern works out. The Coriolis pattern power shields carried by the Blood Angels’ Crimson Paladins generated short-range gravitic fields that could slow or deflect incoming strikes.

They were shelved because they were too power-hungry for mass deployment. It’s a neat reminder that in 40k, a piece of wargear being brilliant doesn’t mean anyone can afford to field it.

Place in the Imperial shield family

Storm shields sit near the top of the Imperial shield family. The combat shield is lighter and leaves a hand free. The boarding shield and praesidium shield serve different roles, and the Anvil Shield is a heavier, rarer piece of kit.

Key facts

  • Storm shields are powered barriers that shimmer blue and crackle with lightning when struck.
  • They’re carried by Space Marine commanders, Veterans and Sergeants, plus Terminators, Custodes and Ordo Malleus forces.
  • They can withstand lascannon fire and super-heavy weaponry, working against melee and ranged attacks alike.
  • Common patterns include Mk.II, Cruciform, Crusader, Sigilite, Dragonscale, Vedic, Vigil and Coriolis.
  • They’re frequently paired with a thunder hammer and decorated with purity seals and chapter heraldry.
  • The Coriolis pattern was a power-hungry Blood Angels prototype that never saw mass deployment.

FAQ

What is a storm shield in Warhammer 40k?

It’s a powered, hand-held shield used by Space Marines, Custodes and Ordo Malleus forces. Its field generator lets it absorb melee and ranged attacks that would otherwise be lethal.

What’s the difference between a storm shield and a combat shield?

A storm shield is bigger, more advanced and has to be held in one hand. A combat shield is smaller and lets the bearer keep using two weapons, but it offers less protection.

How is a storm shield powered?

A generator built into the bearer’s power armour or Terminator armour. When it’s active the shield glows blue and crackles with lightning on impact.

Can a storm shield stop a lascannon?

Yes. Sources describe it as able to withstand a lascannon or even super-heavy weaponry, and it works against melee attacks just as well as ranged ones.
