Tallarn

Tallarn is a desert world in Segmentum Tempestus and the home of the Tallarn Desert Raiders, one of the Astra Militarum’s most famous regiments. It matters because of what happened there during the Horus Heresy: a virus-bombed agri-world that turned into the biggest armoured battle humanity has ever fought.

What Tallarn is

Tallarn is a civilised world classified as a desert planet, sitting in the Tallarn System in Segmentum Tempestus. It’s part of the Imperium and, in the 41st Millennium, it’s known mainly for producing the Tallarn Desert Raiders.

The world you see now isn’t what it always was. Before the Horus Heresy it was a green agri-world bathed in the light of two suns, with plenty of varied biomes and a comfortable place in the Imperium.

From agri-world to ash

Human settlers found Tallarn in the 29th Millennium. The Imperium ran into it later during the Great Crusade and took it without a fight, then used it as a muster world. That meant ammo dumps, military production, vehicle storage, and a solid network of underground bunkers and shelters. Once the Crusade moved on, Tallarn faded into a backwater.

Then the Heresy arrived. The Iron Warriors virus-bombed the planet from orbit to wipe out any resistance before they landed, and the biosphere died. Survivors crawled out of the bunkers to fight the invaders anyway.

With the surface poisoned, infantry couldn’t operate outside shelter. That left tanks. What followed was the largest tank battle in human history, and by the end the sands were littered with the wreckage of over a million armoured vehicles.

Why the Iron Warriors really came

The Iron Warriors weren’t only there to destroy. Perturabo was hunting the Black Oculus, also called the Cursus of Alganar, a portal that would let his Legion strike a pact with daemons and gain power.

Alpha Legion operatives, including their agent Jalen, worked out what was going on and freed Horus’s emissary Argonis to force Perturabo to stop. In the end Horus ordered the Iron Warriors to withdraw. Tallarn was wrecked, but it kept supporting the loyalist war effort for the rest of the Heresy, and the Tallarn Armoured Auxilia fought in the Siege of Terra.

The Tallarn Desert Raiders

The Desert Raiders are the regiments recruited from Tallarn, and their homeworld shaped everything about them. They fight as light, fast mechanised and armoured troops who use the terrain instead of trying to hold it, which makes sense when your planet is an endless hostile desert.

They’re known for hit-and-run tactics, expert use of tanks and transports, and a culture built around survival, faith, and the memory of what their world lost.
