The Angels Vermillion

The Angels Vermillion are a Second Founding successor Chapter of the Blood Angels, and they’re one of the strangest in the bloodline. Where most of Sanguinius’s sons stick together, these marines cut ties with their parent Chapter and their brother successors, choosing to carry the Flaw alone.

Who they are

The Angels Vermillion descend from the Blood Angels and were founded during the Second Founding. Their homeworld is Corinal, and their armour is a dark red, with helmet markings that follow the Blood Angels system for squad type and battlefield role.

Their combat record is genuinely impressive. Imperial records going back to the Second Founding describe their achievements as exemplary. What’s missing is any sign of them fighting alongside the Blood Angels or their fellow successors. They just don’t show up in the same war zones.

  • Founding: Second Founding, from the Blood Angels
  • Homeworld: Corinal
  • Colours: dark red, helmet colour marks squad type
  • Current Chapter Master: Kuldoth Moar

The self-imposed exile

Most Blood Angels successors keep close ties with each other and with their parent Chapter. The Angels Vermillion deliberately don’t. They’ve resolved to bear their curse in solitude, with no contact with their brothers.

It’s not entirely their choice. Even during the dark days of the Imperium Nihilus, Dante refused every appeal to build closer links with them. So the distance runs both ways, and nobody outside the Chapter seems to know exactly why.

The Sorrowing

The Chapter’s secret is the Sorrowing, a darker expression of the Blood Angels’ curse. It’s hidden from the rest of the Imperium, which is part of why the Angels Vermillion keep to themselves. Their battle records are shrouded in secrecy too, so what’s known is mostly the honours they’ve earned, not the cost of earning them.

Origins and notable campaigns

Before the Second Founding, the 9th Chapter of the Blood Angels Legion carried the name Angels Vermillion. Elements of it fought in the Scouring of the Nostramo Sector, first under Praetor Kaelon until his death at Sothis in 017.M31, then under Praetor Sargan Varsaris. On Kalleth they found the crashed Night Lords vessel Shroud of Eventide, salvaged it, and renamed it the Crimson Intent in 020.M31.

Later, as a full Chapter, they sent a company to the Achilus Crusade, and in 992.M41 they answered Mephiston’s call when a tendril of Hive Fleet Kraken hit Hollonan. Sometime before 998.M41, the Order of the Argent Shroud attacked their forward bases under Canoness Dissenta.

Devastation of Baal

When the Tyranids came for Baal, Chapter Master Kuldoth Moar ordered his Chapter to stay out of it. Captain Fern disobeyed, talked three other Captains into joining him, and took their companies to fight for the Blood Angels anyway. It’s the clearest sign that the Chapter’s isolation doesn’t erase the blood bond underneath.
