The Devastation of Baal was the Tyranid assault on the Blood Angels’ homeworld in early M42, part of the Third Tyrannic War. It pulled together the largest gathering of Sanguinius’ bloodline since the Horus Heresy, and it nearly ended them all.
How it started
Before the Tyranids reached Baal, they’d already chewed through the Cryptus System. Imperial forces sacrificed those worlds to slow the swarm down, buying time for Commander Dante to prepare the Blood Angels’ homeworld.
Dante didn’t just sit behind the walls. He launched preemptive strikes to delay and misdirect the approaching armada, and hundreds of splinter fleets were broken that way. It bought time, but it couldn’t stop what was coming.
The gathering of the bloodline
Dante called on the Successor Chapters, and they came. The Flesh Tearers, Blood Drinkers, Carmine Blades, Knights of Blood and others answered, forming the biggest concentration of Sanguinius’ gene-line since the Heresy.
Roughly 30,000 Space Marines assembled in total. About 12,000 held Baal itself, with 6,000 on Baal Secundus, 5,000 on Baal Primus, and the rest spread across warships and orbital stations. The Shadow in the Warp arrived first, a psychic and seismic herald of what was coming.
- Commander Dante (wounded in action)
- Chapter Master Gabriel Seth of the Flesh Tearers
- Chief Librarian Mephiston
- The Sanguinor
- Lord Commander Roboute Guilliman (arrived later)
The battle
Hive Fleet Leviathan hit in numbers that blotted out the stars even after its earlier losses. The Space Marine fleet and orbital defences met the first waves, but the swarm was too vast to stop in space.
The fighting spilled onto all three Baal worlds, with the Tyranids landing in overwhelming force. The Swarmlord led the assault personally. As if that wasn’t enough, the daemon Ka’Bandha and his hordes entered the fray late in the conflict, turning a desperate defence into a three-way slaughter.
Aftermath
It was a victory, but only just. At least twelve Chapter Masters died, including Follordark, Sentor Jool, Castellan Zargo and several captains. Five Chapters were destroyed outright, and six more were nearly wiped out.
The survivors were reduced to less than half their strength, and all but one of the Sanguinary Guard fell. Leviathan was still active across the Baal region afterwards. Guilliman and the Indomitus Crusade arrived in time to reinforce what was left, and the Blood Angels began the long job of rebuilding.
| Side | Key figures | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Imperium | Dante, Seth, Mephiston, the Sanguinor | Pyrrhic victory |
| Tyranids | Hive Mind, Swarmlord | Swarmlord killed, fleet still active |
| Chaos | Ka’Bandha | Driven back into the Warp |
