The Badab War’s Aftermath

The Badab War’s aftermath is the story of what happened once the shooting stopped in 912.M41. The rebellion was crushed, but the consequences rippled through the Maelstrom Zone and the Imperium for centuries.

A war the Imperium wanted forgotten

Imperial records of the Badab War are fragmentary because the conflict was placed under an Edict of Obliteration. That’s why accounts sometimes contradict each other, and why the surviving details come mostly from scattered archives and later retellings.

The war itself ran from 901 to 912.M41, though open fighting didn’t start until 904. Four Space Marine Chapters seceded: the Astral Claws, Lamenters, Executioners, and Mantis Warriors.

The fall of Badab Primaris

The final battle came at Badab Primaris in 913.M41. Loyalist forces, led by the Star Phantoms, broke the Ring of Steel defence network and then assaulted the Palace of Thorns, the Tyrant’s stronghold.

Lugft Huron, the Tyrant of Badab, was wounded rather than killed. The Star Phantoms took heavy losses, around 600 Marines, and the Astral Claws were effectively annihilated. Only about 200 of them survived.

  • Star Phantoms led the final assault on the Palace of Thorns.
  • The Ring of Steel was destroyed using a stellar core fragment towed by the Raptorus Rex.
  • Loyalist victory ended the war in 913.M41.
  • Roughly 600 Star Phantoms died; the Astral Claws were nearly wiped out.

Huron Blackheart and the Red Corsairs

Huron survived the fall of Badab and fled into the Maelstrom with the remnants of his chapter. There he rebuilt his forces as the Red Corsairs, a Chaos-aligned warband that became one of the most persistent threats to Imperial shipping.

As Huron Blackheart, he’s still active in the 41st millennium, raiding from the Maelstrom and troubling the same region he once tried to rule. His survival turned a failed secession into a long-term Chaos problem.

Punishment and penance

The other secessionist chapters didn’t escape. The Lamenters, Executioners, and Mantis Warriors were given penance crusades, essentially century-long punishments meant to atone for their rebellion.

The Mantis Warriors were sent on a hundred-year crusade, and the Lamenters suffered so badly they were nearly destroyed. These chapters survived, but their reputations were permanently stained.

The loyalist chapters also paid a price. The Fire Hawks were effectively destroyed later, though that’s a separate tragedy. The war left the Maelstrom Zone weakened and the Imperium’s trust in its Space Marines shaken.

Why the aftermath matters

The Badab War’s aftermath explains why the Maelstrom is such a dangerous region in later lore. Huron’s Red Corsairs grew out of the defeat, and they’ve been a recurring antagonist ever since.

It also shows how the Imperium handles rebellion among its own elite. The Edict of Obliteration, the penance crusades, and the silence around the war all point to an institution more interested in burying embarrassment than learning from it.
