The Fire Hawks

The Fire Hawks were a loyalist Space Marine chapter, founded during the cursed 21st founding in M36, that earned a reputation for devastating assault tactics before vanishing into the warp in 963.M41. They’re best known for their role in the Badab War, their mobile fortress monastery Raptorus Rex, and the enduring mystery of their fate.

Who the fire hawks were

The Fire Hawks claimed Ultramarines lineage, though the Ultramarines never publicly acknowledged the connection. They were raised during the 21st Founding, the so-called Cursed Founding of M36, which is often blamed for the instability that plagued several chapters from that era.

Their specialty was assault and shock tactics, and their history reads like a long list of brutal victories and near-extinctions. They lost two home worlds over their lifetime, first Zhoros and later Cousteau XI, and were rebuilt from the brink more than once.

The Age of Apostasy and the Raptorus Rex

One of the Fire Hawks’ earliest major actions was during the Age of Apostasy, where they fought alongside the Black Templars, Imperial Fists, Soul Drinkers, and Martian Skitarii against Goge Vandire. Zhoros, their home world, was destroyed by thermal bombs during that conflict.

For their service, Sebastian Thor granted them the Great Crusade-era void-fortress Raptorus Rex to serve as their fortress monastery. That gift turned them into a fleet-based chapter, which shaped everything about how they fought afterward.

The Badab War and the chapter’s decline

The Fire Hawks were the first loyalist chapter drawn into the Badab War, after the Mantis Warriors attacked and captured one of their vessels, the Rapturous Flame, in 904.M41. They entered the war at 86% effective strength, a projected chapter maximum.

The fighting was catastrophic. By the war’s third year, casualties had cut them down to roughly 22% strength, and Lazaerek was pressured to withdraw or risk the chapter’s extinction. They sat out most of the rest of the war until Lazaerek successfully petitioned to rejoin for the closing stages, where Raptorus Rex anchored the Angstrom blockade.

Disappearance and the legion of the damned theory

In 963.M41, the Fire Hawks were lost in the warp. The chapter simply never emerged. Their strength is officially listed as lost or unknown.

Fans and in-universe scholars have long linked that disappearance to the Legion of the Damned, the ghostly marines who appear when things are most desperate. It’s a popular theory, not a confirmed one, and Games Workshop has never settled the question either way.

FAQ

Are the Fire Hawks the Legion of the Damned?

It’s the most popular theory, and the timing of their warp disappearance lines up with early Legion of the Damned sightings. Nothing has ever been confirmed, so treat it as fan speculation rather than canon.

What happened to the Fire Hawks’ home world?

They lost two. Zhoros was destroyed by thermal bombs during the Age of Apostasy, and Cousteau XI was later rendered uninhabitable, which is why they became a fleet-based chapter.

What was the Raptorus Rex?

A Great Crusade-era mobile void-fortress gifted to the Fire Hawks by Sebastian Thor. It served as their fortress monastery and was one of the most powerful warships in the Maelstrom Zone during the Badab War.
