The Black Rage

The Black Rage is a gene-seed flaw that affects the Blood Angels and their successor Chapters. It plunges a Space Marine into a vision of Sanguinius’s death, replacing his mind with fury and turning him into a living echo of the primarch’s final battle.

What it is

The Black Rage is one of two gene-seed flaws shared by the Blood Angels and their successors, the other being the Red Thirst. It’s also called the Flaw of Sanguinius or the First Death. When it takes hold, a battle-brother relives the primarch’s death at the hands of Horus during the Battle of Terra.

He believes he is Sanguinius, and his mind is consumed by anger, hatred and fury. The condition is irreversible, and there’s no cure. Those who fall are locked away in the Tower of the Lost on Baal until they die.

Why it matters

The Black Rage touches every Blood Angels successor Chapter, a psychic imprint left by Sanguinius’s death. It shapes their identity, their rituals and their battlefield doctrine. When a Marine is overcome, he gains a sliver of Sanguinius’s unearthly power, boosting his strength and vitality to superhuman levels.

Rather than let him waste away, the Chapter forms the newly afflicted into the Death Company. They paint their armour black and daub it with red crosses to mark Sanguinius’s wounds. Death Company Chaplains, who can still communicate with the lost, lead them into the most dangerous assaults, hoping for a quick and honourable death.

Only two known individuals can hold the Rage in check: Chaplain Lemartes and Chief Librarian Mephiston. For everyone else, it’s a one-way trip.

Origins and debate

No one agrees on where the Black Rage comes from. Some blame the process of Insanguination, others point to deep-rooted Chaos corruption in Sanguinius during his transport to Baal. The Mechanicum has noted that Blood Angels have an overactive Omophagea, which, combined with their blood rituals, may make them more susceptible to ancestral memories.

Another theory points to Baal Secundus’s toxic and irradiated environment, plus evidence of past mutation among its people. The truth remains unresolved.

Primaris and the Khovan Incident

Early hopes that Primaris Space Marines were more resistant to the Black Rage turned out to be false. The Khovan Incident proved they’re just as vulnerable. Primaris Blood Angels have since joined the Death Company.

The Lestrallio Procedure

Chaplain Lestrallio created a procedure to study the Rage: the afflicted brother is shackled with adamantine, interrogated and observed. It revealed more about the curse’s nature, but it always ends in death as uncontrollable spasms tear the body apart. Lestrallio himself fell to the Black Rage, and the procedure was used on him.
