The Bolt Pistol

The bolt pistol is the hand-held little brother of the bolter, a rare and expensive sidearm that fires self-propelled explosive rounds. It’s standard kit for Assault Marines and a mark of status for anyone else lucky enough to own one.

What it is

A bolt pistol is a smaller version of the bolter, built to be fired one-handed. It shoots bolts: rocket-assisted shells that punch into a target and then detonate. That’s why a hit from one is so devastating compared to a laspistol.

Because the technology behind it is so advanced, bolt pistols are only made in specialised facilities on Mars and on Space Marine homeworlds. Outside elite Imperial forces, they’re rare and expensive to keep fed with ammunition.

Who carries one

Assault Marines are the classic bolt pistol users, often pairing one with a chainsword for close-quarters fighting. Imperial Guard Commissars and officers also favour them, partly for the stopping power and partly for the authority the weapon carries.

For everyone else, owning a bolt pistol is a sign of status and power. Noble families sometimes pass them down as heirlooms, decorated with scrollwork and family crests. You don’t see them on ordinary citizens.

  • Space Marine Assault Marines, usually alongside a chainsword
  • Imperial Guard Commissars and officers
  • Primaris Chaplains, who wield the heavy Absolvor pattern
  • Noble houses, as heirlooms and relics

Patterns and variants

There’s no single bolt pistol. Forge worlds and Chapters produce dozens of patterns, and the differences matter. Some are long-barrelled, some are built for volume of fire, and some are so heavy they’d look like a rifle in an unaugmented human’s hands.

The Absolvor (sometimes spelled Absolver) is a newer, heavier pattern carried by Primaris Chaplains. The Equis pattern, made by White Scars Techmarines, pushes its machine spirit hard to spit out rapid flurries of bolts. Eliminators use a long-barrelled version, and Deathwatch Marines can earn a Guardian bolt pistol as a mark of distinction.

How it fits with other bolt weapons

The bolt pistol sits at the small end of the bolt weapon family. Above it you’ll find the standard boltgun, then the storm bolter, the heavy bolter, and on up to vehicle-mounted monsters like the Vulcan mega-bolter.

Squat forces field their own takes on the design, including an autoch-pattern bolt pistol and a bolt revolver. So even among the Leagues of Votann, the idea of a compact, self-propelled-round sidearm holds up.

  • Assault Marines pair them with chainswords; Commissars and officers also carry them.

FAQ

Is a bolt pistol the same as a bolter?

No. A bolt pistol is a smaller, one-handed version of the bolter. It fires the same kind of explosive bolt rounds, but it’s built for sidearm use rather than as a primary rifle.

Why are bolt pistols rare?

They need advanced manufacturing that only happens on Mars and Space Marine homeworlds, and the ammunition and maintenance are costly. That keeps them out of most ordinary hands.

Who uses bolt pistols most?

Assault Marines are the best-known users, often with a chainsword in the other hand. Imperial Guard Commissars and officers also carry them, and they show up as heirlooms among noble families.
