Mars

Mars is the red planet of the Sol system and the headquarters of the Adeptus Mechanicus. It’s the Imperium’s greatest store of technical knowledge, its most important forge world, and the place where the Cult Mechanicus is run from.

What Mars is

Mars is the fourth planet of the Sol system, sitting in Segmentum Solar. It’s classified as a forge world, and it’s the principal one: the domain and headquarters of the Adeptus Mechanicus. Its population is around twenty billion.

It’s also known as Sacred Mars or simply the Red Planet. In Imperium records its tithe grade is Aptus Non, meaning it doesn’t pay the usual tithe, because Mars answers to the Mechanicus rather than the Administratum.

Why Mars matters

Mars is the Imperium’s biggest single repository of technical knowledge. If something needs designing, rediscovering, or building at scale, the trail usually leads back here.

It’s also a major military hub. The vast docks above its equator hold Battlefleet Solar, the mightiest fleet in the Imperium, and Mars serves as the Segmentum fortress for Segmentum Solar. Several Titan Legions call it home, including the Legio Ignatum.

The planet’s output is staggering. Trillions of tons of cargo move down to the surface or up to the orbiting manufactorums every day, carried by void-lifts.

Who rules, and how society works

Mars is ruled directly by the Fabricator-General, who also leads the Synod of Mars, the body that governs the forge world and the wider Cult Mechanicus.

Martian society is heavily stratified. At the bottom are unaugmented human citizens doing simple labour in huge numbers. Most of them hope to climb by joining the Skitarii, which earns them their first bionics. Above them sit the Tech-Priests, the ruling order.

Natives tend to be tall, with delicate bones shaped by millennia of low gravity. Vat-born humans created on Mars share those traits.

History and lingering rumours

Mars was the first planet humans ever terraformed, back in the early 22nd century. Once habitable, it was settled by industrial cartels and grew into the first hive world, a centre of industry and science. During the Dark Age of Technology, Mars and Earth coexisted peacefully.

Two rumours refuse to die. One says the C’tan known as the Void Dragon sleeps deep beneath the surface. The other claims Ferrus Manus survived the Isstvan V massacre and lives on Mars, which the Iron Hands flatly reject.
