The Cicatrix Maledictum is the Imperium’s name for the Great Rift, a chain of catastrophic Warp tears that split the galaxy in half at the end of the 41st Millennium. Its zones are the regions of reality it swallowed, cut off, or warped, and they’re where Chaos got its biggest foothold since the Horus Heresy.
What the Cicatrix Maledictum actually is
It’s a linked series of Warp rifts, not one clean scar. The rift tore open at the close of the 41st Millennium during the Thirteenth Black Crusade, right after Cadia fell.
Nobody knows the true cause. Theories include the destruction of the Cadian Pylons, sorcery by Magnus the Red at the Siege of Fenris, the awakening of Ynnead, mass bloodshed in the Damocles Gulf, or the Ruinous Powers reacting to Roboute Guilliman’s resurrection. Guilliman himself suspects Abaddon spent ten thousand years destroying blackstone-rich worlds, with Cadia as the trigger.
The zones and what they do
The rift’s zones aren’t just empty Warp space. They’re regions where the laws of physics fray. Time runs wrong: some worlds live centuries in an instant, others freeze, others shift constantly.
Whole star systems have vanished into the rift. Civilisations have collapsed overnight as people turned on each other under twisted skies. Ships caught near a zone have been boarded by monsters that slaughtered or vented their crews, and even stars have swollen red or been dragged into the Warp.
The Blackness and the split Imperium
The event known as the Blackness is what made the zones so devastating. Warp travel and astropathic communication became nearly impossible, cutting off huge numbers of Imperial worlds.
Those isolated worlds were overwhelmed by Chaos forces. The rift effectively divided the Imperium in two, and the half on the far side, sometimes called the Imperium Nihilus, is still largely cut off from Terra.
Other names for the same wound
Every culture sees the rift differently. The Orks call it Gork’s Grin, the Asuryani call it the Dathedian, and the T’au know it as the Greater Axial Rift or Mont’yhe’va, the Devourer of Hope.
The Space Wolves and the people of Fenris call it Everdusk. To the Imperium it’s the Cicatrix Maledictum, and from the western side of Segmentum Solar it shows as a bruise across the sky.

FAQ
Is the Cicatrix Maledictum the same as the Great Rift?
Yes. Cicatrix Maledictum is the Imperial name for the Great Rift. Other factions and cultures have their own names for it.
What caused the Cicatrix Maledictum?
It’s officially unknown. The leading theories point to the fall of Cadia and the destruction of the Cadian Pylons, but Magnus’s sorcery, Ynnead’s awakening, and Abaddon’s long campaign against blackstone worlds are all plausible.
Why does the rift matter for Chaos?
It tore open stable routes through the Warp, cut off Imperial worlds from reinforcement, and gave Chaos forces room to overrun whole regions. It’s the biggest strategic opening Chaos has had in ten thousand years.
