The Genesis Chapter

The Genesis Chapter is the first of the Primogenitors, the original Second Founding successors of the Ultramarines. They’re dogmatically loyal to Roboute Guilliman’s memory, fight at the Ultramarines’ side without hesitation, and treat the Codex Astartes as close to holy writ.

Origins and character

The Genesis Chapter was created during the Second Founding from the noblest Ultramarines veterans who survived the Horus Heresy. They hold the honor of being the first Primogenitor, the first of the original successor Chapters. Their first battle was to wrest the planet Newfound from the Word Bearers, and they’ve been dogmatically loyal to Guilliman’s memory ever since.

Their homeworld is Newfound, and their Chapter Master is Eorloid. They wear red armor with white markings and a yellow aquila. As a Codex Chapter, they follow the Codex Astartes strictly. Their Chaplains treat it as sacrosanct and debate any point of contention with the Ultramarines’ Chaplains to avoid doctrinal drift.

The bond with the Ultramarines

No other Chapter is closer to the Ultramarines in doctrine or location. The Genesis Chapter routinely fills gaps in Ultramarine companies when they fall below Codex strength, or supplies specialists for the Librarius or Forge. Many of their Space Marines make at least one pilgrimage to the Shrine of the Primarch.

They also maintain the Newfound Expeditionary Auxilia, a force of armed Chapter Serfs that fights alongside them, similar to the Ultramar Auxilia.

Notable battles

The Genesis Chapter has fought in many major conflicts. They defended Ultramar from Orks during the War of the Beast, and took part in the Achilus Crusade, the 13th Black Crusade, and the Indomitus Crusade. They also conducted Exterminatus missions in the Ulik Sector to deny Hive Fleet Leviathan resources.

In 777.M41, a strike force went to the quarantined world of Argoth on the Canis Salient on the orders of Lord Ebongrave, supposedly to fight Tau emissaries. Watch-Station Hestus intercepted their call for aid, but Lord Commander Ebongrave overruled any Imperial deployment to the area. The Deathwatch had to mount a secret mission to find out what happened to them.

At the Battle of Quradim in M42, a Genesis force supported by the Newfound Expeditionary Auxilia died to the last defending the planet against the Iron Warriors of Dru’Kashyl. The Chapter also sent two companies to Vigilus during the War of Beasts, fought in the Nachmund Rift War, and supplied six companies for the Plague Wars. After the first phase of the Indomitus Crusade, 2nd Captain Portan was named a Tetrarch of Ultramar by Guilliman.

Sometime before the 13th Black Crusade, the Genesis cruiser Daidem Mantle, under Captain Aeneas, attacked the Night Lords vessel Echo of Damnation under Talos in orbit above Tsagualsa. The Genesis assault used drop pods and tried to seize the ship’s bridge, but they failed and were destroyed when Talos half-destroyed a moon, taking the cruiser with it.

During the Fourteenth Siege of Antigonis, a Genesis captain was deliberately provoked into single combat by a captain of the Minotaurs. Only a fresh wave of Orks arriving from the Octarian Empire stopped relations between the two Chapters from deteriorating into open war.

Heraldry and notable marines

The Genesis Chapter’s symbol is a stylized black alpha superimposed on an inverted white trigon. Company affiliation is shown by the color of the pauldron trim, as per the Codex. Squad markings follow the same Codex pattern as the Ultramarines, with black roman numerals for squad number laid over white battlefield role icons on the right pauldron. Sergeants wear white skulls on their red helms, while Veteran Sergeants wear golden skulls. Veteran Marines bear a white stripe on their helmet.

Notable members include Chapter Master Eorloid; 2nd Captain Portan, named a Tetrarch of Ultramar; Company Champion Tolemion; and Anchises, seconded to the Deathwatch as part of Kill Team Beta. Other named members include Apothecary Jovian, Chaplain Toreus, Epistolary Hesiod, Sergeant Ryvan, and Brothers Batra, Daenos, Grakal, Kiril, and Thevolin.
