Vigilus is a hive world in the Nachmund subsector that became one of the only stable passages through the Great Rift. That single fact turned a busy Imperial manufacturing planet into one of the most contested battlegrounds in the galaxy.
What vigilus actually is
Vigilus sits in the Segmentum Obscurus, in the Nachmund subsector, with a population somewhere around 167 billion. It’s classed as a hive world and a war world, and it pays its tithe at Solutio Extremis, the highest grade the Administratum hands out.
Before the Great Rift tore the galaxy open, Vigilus was a workhorse: vast hive cities and colossal forges, broken up by dust-bowl wastes and fortified reservoirs guarding what little drinkable water the planet has. It was a major source of manpower and war material.
- Segmentum: Obscurus
- Subsector: Nachmund
- Population: roughly 167 billion
- Class: hive world, war world, Sentinel World
- Tithe grade: Solutio Extremis
Why it matters: the Nachmund Gauntlet
When the Cicatrix Maledictum opened, Vigilus ended up on the wrong side of it, in Imperium Nihilus. But it also sits on one of the only reliable routes across the rift, the Nachmund Gauntlet.
That makes it a lifeline. Refugees pile into the hive sprawls hoping to cross, and the planet’s location turned it into a stronghold for the Mechanicum, particularly Stygies VIII, thanks to its proximity to the Stygius Front.
The bastion-class force fields
Vigilus has one export the wider Imperium genuinely wants: bastion-class force fields. Local Tech-Priests found an STC that let them build the things, and they became a staple of Imperial defensive technology.
The versions protecting the hive sprawls are psychically charged. Anyone who tries to push through one gets knocked into a coma, which lets the defenders cut them down at their leisure.
Who’s fighting over it
Just about everyone. Orks, Genestealer Cults, Dark Eldar and Saim-Hann Eldar have all embedded themselves on the planet, and Chaos forces are in the mix too. The world has been pushed to the brink of collapse.
The largest of these conflicts is the War of Beasts, the campaign that defines Vigilus in the current lore.
- Orks
- Genestealer Cults
- Dark Eldar
- Saim-Hann Eldar
- Chaos forces
Who ran the place
For millennia Vigilus was ruled by Governor Lucienne Agamemnus IX, head of a dynasty that had a long-standing treaty with the Mechanicum. The Ecclesiarchy constantly chipped away at that power, though, winning influence over the planetary defence forces (the Vigilant Guard and Vigilant Creedsmen) and the local Imperial Guard garrisons, and bringing in Adepta Sororitas enforcers to keep their grip firm.
Open war between the dynasty, the Mechanicum and the Ministorum was avoided by a joint body called the Aquiliarian Council. It held the balance, at least for a while.
