Commissar Sebastian Yarrick

Commissar Sebastian Yarrick is the Astra Militarum officer who became the Imperium’s most famous Ork-fighter during the Second and Third Wars for Armageddon. Orks call him Old Bale Eye. The people of Armageddon just call him the Old Man.

Who is commissar yarrick?

Yarrick is a Commissar of the Astra Militarum, born Sebastian Vaarden on Taos III. Orphaned at seven when Orks invaded his homeworld, he survived three years alone in the forests, trapping Greenskins, before Imperial forces found him.

He took his grandfather’s name, Yarrick, and was sent to the Schola Progenium. There he trained as a Militarum Tempestus storm trooper before becoming a Commissar alongside his friend Dominic Seroff.

He’s served across dozens of campaigns and is known for unswerving loyalty to the Emperor. Even Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka, the Ork warlord he’s fought twice, reportedly respects him.

The wars for Armageddon

By 941.M41, Yarrick was already old and due to retire the very day the Orks landed for the Second War for Armageddon. Instead, he stayed and fought. He’d learned the Ork language from a captured raider in his youth and understood how Orks think, which made him devastatingly effective against them.

He lost an arm during the fighting. Accounts vary on exactly how, but he replaced it with a bionic one. He also had a bionic eye installed that could fire a laser beam, which is how the Orks got the name Old Bale Eye.

When Ghazghkull returned for the Third War for Armageddon, Yarrick was there to meet him again. His leadership during both conflicts turned him into one of the greatest heroes the Imperium has.

What makes him different

Most Commissars enforce discipline through fear, executing cowards on the spot. Yarrick does that too, but his reputation rests on something else: he fights alongside the troops and refuses to back down.

He’s also unusual in how well he understands his enemy. His grasp of Ork psychology let him predict their moves and use their own culture against them.

The Orks themselves treat him as a worthy opponent. Ghazghkull’s own words about him are, in Ork terms, high praise.
