Dire Avenger

Dire Avengers are the most common and tactically flexible Aspect Warriors of the Craftworld Aeldari. They fight as Khaine’s aspect of the noble but merciless warrior, punishing the unworthy and defending their people with absolute devotion. Their adaptability and discipline make them the Aspect Warriors most often trusted with dangerous missions.

Origins and role

Every Dire Avenger traces their path back to Asurmen, the first Phoenix Lord and founder of the Aspect Shrines. He established more shrines on more craftworlds than any other Phoenix Lord, which is exactly why his followers are so widespread. In the Aeldari tongue they are known as Fian Dialcaman.

Unlike specialists such as Fire Dragons or Howling Banshees, Dire Avengers don’t lock themselves into a single narrow role. They read the flow of a battle the way a sailor reads the sea, picking the right tactic in the moment. That flexibility makes them the most tactically adaptable Aspect Warriors around.

Wargear and armour

Their signature weapon is the Avenger Shuriken Catapult, a modified shuriken catapult with an extended barrel, a power feed, and an inbuilt rangefinder. To a Dire Avenger, using a shuriken isn’t just shooting, it’s an art form. They unleash storms of monomolecular blades that can cut infantry to ribbons.

Like all Aspect Warriors they wear Aspect Armour, a psychically activated bodysuit that stiffens on impact to absorb blows while still letting the warrior move freely. Dire Avenger armour is mostly blue, with a tall crested helm that makes them look taller without adding bulk. The crest is often made from exotic animal hair dyed to match their craftworld’s colours.

A white tabard is common, inscribed with runes that name the warrior’s shrine and craftworld. Over each shoulder sits an advanced pan-spectral targeter linked to the catapult. It tracks multiple targets, tells friend from foe, and feeds everything straight to the helm display. Even off the battlefield, a Dire Avenger stays armed, keeping razor-sharp shuriken discs hidden under their clothing after they’ve taken off their armour and left the shrine.

  • Avenger Shuriken Catapult: extended barrel, power feed, inbuilt rangefinder.
  • Aspect Armour: psychically activated, stiffens on impact, moulds to the body for free movement.
  • High crested helm and white tabard with shrine and craftworld runes.
  • Shoulder targeter: pan-spectral rangefinder that feeds data to the helm.

Squads, shrines, and the Exarch

Dire Avengers organise into shrines and usually deploy in squads of five to ten. A Wave Serpent transport sometimes carries them into the fight. Each shrine is led by an Exarch, a veteran who has walked the Path of the Warrior for so long they’ve lost themselves on it and now embody the aspect completely.

The Exarch wears distinctive armour and can be equipped for melee or ranged support. Whatever the loadout, the core of the shrine stays the same: flexible, disciplined, and deadly. Known Dire Avenger shrines exist across the craftworlds, and notable Dire Avengers have made their mark in lore.

On the tabletop

Dire Avengers are often the first Aspect Warriors you’ll face, both in lore and on the tabletop. They’re a solid, flexible unit that can hold objectives and pour out shuriken fire. Their Exarch gives the squad options, making them a versatile choice for any Aeldari force.
