An Aspect Shrine is a hidden training temple inside an Aeldari Craftworld where Aspect Warriors learn one specialized way of fighting. Each shrine is devoted to a single facet of the war god Kaela Mensha Khaine and is run by an Exarch who has permanently left the Path of the Warrior.
What an aspect shrine actually is
Shrines are the training temples of the Path of the Warrior. An Aeldari who feels the touch of Khaine, whether through anger, fear, grief, or an unshakable pull toward violence, joins a shrine to learn control rather than falling into excess.
Inside, they learn to build and wear a war mask. This lets them hold their fury back until battle, then unleash it. Outside of training or a summons, they lift the mask and live a normal Craftworld life.
Each shrine is a secret location, sometimes called an Aspect Temple, that you won’t find by wandering the corridors. Every shrine is reached through a Webway Portal, and only the shrine’s Exarch can open the innermost chamber. Because shrines of the same Aspect are linked through the Webway, their innermost chambers connect across Craftworlds.
Each shrine is devoted to one Aspect, a single facet of Khaine that shapes how the warriors fight, what they wear, and how they think about war. The founder of a shrine becomes its Phoenix Lord, and the shrine’s warriors embody that founder’s way of war.
Exarchs and the warriors they train
Exarchs are the instructors, and they’re also a warning. They’re the ones who could never lift their war mask again, so they stay in the shrine permanently, outside of battle, and never walk another Path.
They live in the shrines as keepers, lighting incense, maintaining the armoury, and guarding the portal. They only leave in times of war or for a conclave. Each Exarch also has a throne within their shrine.
Regular Aspect Warriors are different. Once they feel they’ve mastered their emotions and don’t need the mask, they leave the Path and start a new one. That’s why shrines are full of temporary students, not career soldiers.
Aspect Warriors also carry a symbolic relic of their shrine so they can observe proper rituals wherever they are. At minimum, that’s a meditative wraithbone icon, usually shaped as a rune tied to their Aspect. Some carry battle rites, poetry, or speeches of past heroes.
| Role | Status |
|---|---|
| Exarch | Stuck on the Path forever, trains the shrine’s warriors |
| Aspect Warrior | Walks the Path for a time, then moves on |
| Phoenix Lord | The shrine’s legendary founder, tied to its Aspect |
How many Aspects are there?
Nobody knows. New Aspects gain favour and old ones fade with each generation, and some are unique to a single Craftworld. The Slicing Orbs of Zandros, for example, exist in one shrine on one Craftworld, and they’re as unsettling as the name suggests.
The firstborn Aspects, created by Asurmen’s original students, are said to endure forever. That group includes the Dire Avengers, Howling Banshees, Fire Dragons, Dark Reapers, Swooping Hawks, and Striking Scorpions.
The first shrine and known examples
Asurmen founded the First Shrine in the days after the Fall of the Eldar, setting the template for every Aspect Shrine that followed. Shrine colours are unique to each shrine, so two Dire Avenger shrines won’t look the same on the battlefield.
There are many known shrines, each with its own name and reputation. Dire Avenger shrines include the Alabaster Crescent, Argent Crest, Asurmen’s Heart, and the Sons of Asurmen. Howling Banshee shrines include the Ascendant Echo, Bloody Shriek, and Crimson Scream.
- Storm Throne: Howling Banshees
- Raptor’s Throne: Swooping Hawks
- Flaming Throne: Fire Dragons
- Fanged Throne: Warp Spiders
The best-known Aspects
Most Craftworlds host shrines for the common Aspects, so you’ll see these names again and again across the galaxy.
| Aspect | Specialty |
|---|---|
| Dire Avengers | Flexible, disciplined line troops |
| Howling Banshees | Fast, close-range melee |
| Striking Scorpions | Stealth and ambush |
| Fire Dragons | Anti-armour, melta weapons |

FAQ
What’s the difference between an Aspect Warrior and an Exarch?
An Aspect Warrior walks the Path of the Warrior for a time, then leaves to try another Path. An Exarch is someone who could never take off their war mask, so they stay in the shrine and train others forever.
Can a Craftworld have more than one aspect shrine?
Yes, usually many. Most Craftworlds have shrines for the common Aspects, and some have unique local Aspects found nowhere else.
Who founds an aspect shrine?
Each shrine traces back to its Phoenix Lord, the founder who first embodied that Aspect. The firstborn Aspects came from Asurmen’s original students, and Asurmen himself founded the First Shrine after the Fall.
What is an Aspect Shrine in Warhammer 40k?
It’s a hidden temple inside an Aeldari Craftworld where Aspect Warriors train in a single Aspect of Khaine. Each shrine is reached through a Webway Portal and is kept by an Exarch.
