Imperial Fists Legion

The Imperial Fists Legion was the VII Legion of the original twenty Space Marine Legions, created from the gene-seed of Primarch Rogal Dorn. They’re famous for stubborn defence, siegecraft, and holding Terra during the Horus Heresy, which earned them the nickname the Defenders of Terra.

Who the Imperial Fists Legion were

The Imperial Fists started out as the VII Legion, one of the twenty original Legions. Their Primarch was Rogal Dorn, and they were among the nine Legions that stayed loyal when the Horus Heresy tore the Imperium apart.

Their homeworld was Terra, though Inwit is also listed as a former homeworld. After the Heresy, the Legion was broken down under the Codex Astartes into Chapters, with the Imperial Fists Chapter carrying on the name. Their fortress-monastery is the massive starship Phalanx.

What made them stand out

These are siege specialists, and they’ve got the reputation to match. Before the Heresy they focused on ship-borne assaults, boarding actions, fortification work, and breaking strongholds. After the Heresy they became known mainly for defence and siege warfare.

They’re also stubborn to a fault. Sources describe them as stoic and implacable, but with a streak of self-flagellation. That mix of duty and grim self-punishment runs through their culture, from honour duels to scrimshaw and rituals around pain and punishment.

  • Legion number: VII
  • Primarch: Rogal Dorn
  • Pre-Heresy colours: grey and yellow
  • Post-Heresy colours: yellow and black
  • Battle cry: ‘Primarch-Progenitor, to your glory and the glory of him on earth!’
  • Current Chapter Master: Gregor Dessian

The rivalry with the Iron Warriors

The Imperial Fists have a bitter, long-running rivalry with the Iron Warriors that predates the Horus Heresy. Both Legions specialise in siege warfare, which only sharpened the feud.

That rivalry played out in some of the Heresy’s worst fights, including the Iron Cage, a brutal grinding battle that left deep scars on the Fists.

The defence of Terra and after

Their most famous moment is the defence of Terra during the Horus Heresy. Rogal Dorn led the fortification of the Imperial Palace, and the Fists held the line against Horus’s forces. That’s where the ‘Defenders of Terra’ title comes from.

After the Heresy, Dorn pushed for vengeance, but the Legion was eventually reorganised into Chapters under the Codex Astartes. The Imperial Fists Chapter kept the name and the yellow-and-black colours, and they’ve been a pillar of the Imperium ever since.
