The Grey Hunters

The Grey Hunters are the backbone of the Space Wolves Chapter, the hardened battleline that makes up most of a Great Company. They’re what happens when a reckless Blood Claw survives long enough to grow fangs, grey hair, and a hunter’s patience.

What the Grey Hunters are

They’re the second rank a Space Wolf can reach, sitting right above the Blood Claws and below the Wolf Guard. In a Codex Chapter you’d call their equivalents Tactical Squads, and that’s the role they fill: the flexible core of a Space Wolves force.

Getting there isn’t quick. A Blood Claw can spend decades, sometimes centuries, proving he won’t die stupidly before he’s promoted. Only then does he trade his bolt pistol for a boltgun and join a Grey Hunter pack.

Why they matter

Grey Hunters are the point where raw Fenrisian aggression gets sharpened into something genuinely dangerous. They still love a fight, but they’ve learned when to hold back, lay down suppression fire, and close in with discipline before the charge.

They’re also the pool the Chapter draws its future leaders from. A Grey Hunter who proves himself can be picked for the Wolf Guard, which is a huge honour for both the warrior and his pack. Later in their career, packs often move on to become Long Fangs, the Chapter’s heavy weapon specialists.

  • Second rank in the Space Wolves, above Blood Claws.
  • Form the bulk of a Great Company’s fighting strength.
  • Excel at both attack and defence, and can read which one a fight needs.
  • Common stepping stone to the Wolf Guard or the Long Fangs.

The Canis Helix and the look of a hunter

The Space Wolves geneseed, the Canis Helix, keeps changing a Marine as he ages. By the time he’s a Grey Hunter, his hair has actually gone grey, his fangs have grown longer, his hide has thickened, and in some cases his eyes turn yellow.

It’s a visible mark of experience. The older a Space Wolf gets, the more he looks like the wolves of Fenris, and Grey Hunters are where that really starts to show.

Wargear and organisation

A standard pack runs five to ten Marines. Everyone carries a boltgun, a close combat weapon, and frag and krak grenades. A few can swap up to a meltagun, flamer, or plasma gun, or take a power weapon or power fist. One Marine may carry the Wolf Standard.

With the arrival of Primaris Marines, Logan Grimnar has tried to blend old Fenrisian custom with the new reinforcements. Some Grey Hunters now serve as Suppressor Squads, and they’ve built a friendly rivalry with the Chapter’s Intercessors, competing in hunting, feats of strength, drinking, and eating. Other accounts say Grey Hunters simply take on the Intercessor role when needed.

FAQ

What’s the difference between Grey Hunters and Blood Claws?

Blood Claws are the youngest, most reckless Space Wolves, armed with bolt pistols and chainswords. Grey Hunters are veterans who’ve survived that phase, traded up to boltguns, and learned patience and tactics.

Can Grey Hunters become Wolf Guard?

Yes. Brave, skilled Grey Hunters are regularly chosen for the Wolf Guard, which is a great honour for the individual and his pack. Packs may even compose a saga to commemorate it.

Do Grey Hunters become Long Fangs?

Often, yes. After serving as Grey Hunters for a time, a pack may be reformed into a Long Fangs heavy weapon team.
