Primaris Marine

The Primaris Marine is an upgraded breed of Astartes created by Archmagos Belisarius Cawl over ten thousand years of secret work, then unleashed during the Indomitus era. Bigger, tougher, and carrying extra organs, they reshaped how the Imperium fights and are now the default Space Marine in modern 40k.

What makes a Primaris Marine different

Cawl rebuilt the process from the ground up using the Sangprimus Portum, a trove of data covering all twenty Primarchs that Guilliman handed him after the Horus Heresy. The result is a Marine who’s larger and more physically powerful than the old pattern, with gene-seed that’s more stable and less prone to corruption.

They’re taller and stronger than standard Astartes, with extra organs layered on top of the original nineteen. The most visible upgrades are the Sinew Coils, which reinforce muscle and bone, and the Magnificat, a small gland that helps them grow larger and heal faster. They also have the Belisarian Furnace, a gland that releases a burst of restorative chemicals when they’re badly wounded.

  • Sinew Coils: toughened muscle and bone for greater strength and durability.
  • Magnificat: drives their extra growth and speeds up recovery.
  • Belisarian Furnace: triggers a surge of healing when they’re near death.

Ten thousand years in the making

Guilliman charged Cawl with building a new legion of warriors for the Imperium’s next darkest hour, but the work took millennia. Cawl began the project during the War of the Beast, but the High Lords of Terra shelved it for millennia. Guilliman ordered it restarted after his resurrection, and the first Primaris were created from gene-seed of all nine loyalist Legions.

Tens of thousands of Primaris Marines were grown in secret and stored in stasis aboard Cawl’s flagship, the Zar-Quaesitor. Even asleep, they were trained and indoctrinated through simulation programs fed straight into their brains. They only woke when Guilliman returned and the Indomitus Crusade was being planned.

How they were deployed

Roughly half of the awakened Primaris Marines were used to found brand new Chapters in the Ultima Founding. The rest were organised into vast armies called the Unnumbered Sons.

The Unnumbered Sons wore plain grey armour, so they nicknamed themselves the Greyshields. Their ranks mixed Marines from different genetic lineages, partly to encourage cooperation between Chapters and partly because so many Successor Chapters existed that nobody could say for certain which one a given Marine belonged to. Over the course of the Indomitus Crusade, they were whittled down as individuals were sent to reinforce existing Chapters across the galaxy.

The process of turning a regular Marine into a Primaris, called the Calgarian Rites, was later developed, but it’s risky and not everyone survives it. Some chapters resisted the change, but most accepted the reinforcements because they needed the numbers. The older Marines didn’t disappear either. They’re now called Firstborn, and they still fight alongside their newer brothers.

Ranks, squads and wargear

Primaris Marines slot into the same command structure as other Space Marines, but they bring their own squad types and equipment. The most recognisable are Intercessors, the backbone troops, alongside specialists like Inceptors, Aggressors and Reivers.

Their gear is built to match their size. The Mark X power armour is modular, with different configurations for different roles, and it’s built to accommodate their larger frames. They also field new vehicles like the Repulsor and Impulsor, plus bolt rifles and a family of aircraft designed specifically for them.

Where you’ll see them

Primaris feature heavily in the Indomitus era lore, from the Plague Wars to the Arks of Omen. They’re the default Space Marine in modern 40k, and the tabletop range reflects that.

In the video game Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, the protagonist Demetrian Titus returns as a Primaris Marine, which is a good example of how the setting has moved on.

Key facts

  • Primaris Marines were created by Archmagos Belisarius Cawl on Guilliman’s orders, using the Sangprimus Portum’s data on all twenty Primarchs.
  • They have three extra organs: Sinew Coils, Magnificat, and Belisarian Furnace.
  • Tens of thousands were kept in stasis aboard the Zar-Quaesitor and mentally trained through simulations.
  • Half founded new Chapters in the Ultima Founding; the rest formed the Unnumbered Sons, nicknamed the Greyshields.
  • They wear modular Mark X power armour and use new vehicles like the Repulsor.
  • Existing Marines can become Primaris via the Calgarian Rites, but it’s risky.

FAQ

Are Primaris Marines stronger than regular Space Marines?

Yes, they’re bigger, tougher, and have extra organs that make them faster and harder to kill, with more stable gene-seed. But experience still matters, and a veteran Firstborn can outfight a fresh Primaris.

Can a regular Space Marine become a Primaris?

Yes, through a dangerous procedure called the Calgarian Rites. It’s not guaranteed to work, and some chapters have lost brothers to it.

Who created the Primaris Marines?

Belisarius Cawl, a tech-priest and Archmagos Dominus, started the project long ago. Roboute Guilliman ordered it completed after his return.

What are the Unnumbered Sons?

The great Primaris armies raised for the Indomitus Crusade. They wore grey armour, called themselves the Greyshields, and were gradually split up to reinforce existing Chapters.

When did Primaris Marines first appear?

In the closing days of the 41st Millennium, after the Thirteenth Black Crusade and Guilliman’s resurrection, when the Indomitus Crusade began.
