The Solar War was the opening battle of the Horus Heresy’s final act, fought across the Sol System from 010 to 014.M31. It pitted Horus’s traitor armada against Rogal Dorn’s layered defences, and its outcome decided whether Terra would be besieged.
What the Solar War was
The Solar War was the campaign Horus had to win before he could set foot on Terra. The Sol System was the Imperium’s heart, ringed with shipyards, fortresses, and loyalist fleets, and the Warmaster couldn’t simply sail past them.
It ran from 010 to 014.M31 and ended in a traitor victory. That didn’t mean Terra fell right away, but it did mean the Siege of Terra could begin.
Dorn’s preparations
With the Emperor busy in the War Within the Webway and Malcador tied up with the Shadow Wars, the defence of Sol fell to Rogal Dorn. He turned the Imperial Palace into a fortress and organised the system into a chain of defensive Spheres.
Each Sphere mixed Imperial Fists with loyalist Imperial Army and Mechanicum forces. Dorn kept most of his Astartes back on Terra, saving them for the siege he knew was coming.
- First Sphere: Pluto to Neptune, outermost line
- Second Sphere: commanded by Halbract
- Third Sphere: commanded by Effried
- Fourth Sphere: commanded by Camba Diaz
- Fifth Sphere: the final layer around Terra itself
How the traitors broke through
The Alpha Legion opened the campaign with infiltration and sabotage rather than a straight fight. Their operatives, working with the Dark Mechanicum, softened up the outer defences before the main fleet arrived.
When Horus brought his armada in, he did it in force. Tens of thousands of warships, drawn from the Sons of Horus, Iron Warriors, Thousand Sons, Word Bearers, World Eaters, Emperor’s Children, and Night Lords, pushed through the Spheres one by one.
The loyalists gave ground slowly. Jaghatai Khan and Sanguinius arrived with the White Scars and Blood Angels for the final phase, but by then the traitors had already punched through to the inner system.
Aftermath
The Solar War cost billions of civilian lives alone. The traitors won, but the cost was steep on both sides, and the loyalist fleets were badly mauled.
With Sol’s outer defences gone, Horus could land on Terra. The Siege of Terra followed, and the war entered its last and bloodiest stage.
