The Imperial Guard’s command is the hierarchy that turns billions of ordinary humans into the Imperium’s largest army. It runs from the High Lords of Terra down to the lowliest guardsman, and it’s built to keep a war going across a million worlds.
What the command actually is
The chain of authority belongs to the Astra Militarum, the Imperium’s main army. The Departmento Munitorum, the Administratum’s militant arm, controls it, and its masters sit on the High Lords of Terra. The relevant High Lords here are the Chancellor of the Estate Imperium, the Master of the Administratum and, most importantly, the Lord Commander Militant of the Imperial Guard.
The Lord Commander Militant is the top Guard officer. Below him sit the Lord Commanders of the five Segmentae: Solar, Pacificus, Tempestus, Obscurus and Ultima. Each one is notionally in charge of all military operations in their part of the galaxy.
That’s the theory. In practice, the distances involved are so vast that actual direction of Guard forces falls to officers much lower down the command tree. The High Lords set the wishes, the Lord Commander Militant passes them down, and the people who really move regiments around are the ones on the ground.
Ranks from top to bottom
The highest conventional rank is Lord General Militant, who can command armies of almost limitless size. Below that comes the General Staff, a sprawling, decentralised group of officers spread across every major and many minor battle zones. A General will usually command a battlegroup made up of several regiments.
Regiments are led by Colonels, with their own officers and non-commissioned officers underneath. The ladder also includes Major, Lieutenant and Corporal, which often get skipped in quick summaries. At the bottom are the guardsmen and, below them, conscripts or probators.
One thing to keep in mind: regiment size varies, so company and platoon subdivisions differ too. Localised regiment terminology can make ranks sound more confusing than they are.
| Rank | Role |
|---|---|
| Lord Commander Militant | Overall commander of the Imperial Guard |
| Lord Commander | Commands one of the five Segmentae |
| Lord General Militant | Highest conventional rank, commands vast armies |

| Colonel | Commands a regiment |
| Major | Senior regimental officer |
| Captain | Commands a company |
| Lieutenant | Junior commissioned officer |
| Sergeant | Commands a squad |
| Corporal | Junior non-commissioned officer |
| Guardsman | The standard soldier |
Commissars and the Officio Prefectus
Commissars of the Officio Prefectus operate in parallel to the Astra Militarum chain of command, and technically outside it. They’re political officers, not line officers, but they’re embedded deep in Guard life. Every regiment has at least one attached, and often more.
They also turn up in General Staff groupings, which means a commissar can be sitting in the same room as the officers planning a campaign. Their authority comes from the Commissariat rather than the regiment, and that’s what lets them do the job.
Suborganisations of the Astra Militarum
The Guard isn’t just infantry regiments. It includes several named suborganisations that handle specialised work. You’ll see them referenced in dispatches and order-of-battle lists.
They are the Militarum Vendorum, the Militarum Ordinatus, the Militarum Auxilla, the Militarum Tempestus and the Militarum Regimentos. Each covers a different slice of what the Astra Militarum does, from auxiliary troops to the Tempestus Scions.

The Warmaster exception
One rank sits outside the normal ladder: Warmaster. It’s handed out only by agreement of the High Lords to command a Crusade, and it isn’t reachable by any conventional promotion. It’s rare enough that centuries can pass without anyone holding it, and it’s unlikely more than one exists at a time.
