The Imperial Navy

The Imperial Navy, or Navis Imperialis, is the spacefaring armed force of the Imperium of Man. Where the Astra Militarum fights on the ground, the Navy owns the void: warships, warp travel, orbital bombardment, and the defence of every sector the Imperium claims.

What the Imperial Navy actually is

It’s the military arm of the Imperial Fleet, and one of the Imperium’s two main conventional armed forces alongside the Astra Militarum. Its job is to hold the void, move armies, and fight anything that threatens Imperial space, whether that’s xenos fleets, Chaos raiders, or rebels inside the borders.

The Navy answers to the Lord High Admiral of the Imperial Navy, with its administrative heart at Naval Headquarters on Terra. In High Gothic it’s called the Navis Imperialis.

Why it was split from the Imperial Army

During the Great Crusade, the Navy didn’t exist as a separate thing. It was a sub-branch of the Imperial Army called the Imperialis Armada, mostly used to defend Imperial space while planetary invasions were handled by the Legiones Astartes fleets.

After the Horus Heresy, when so much of the Army turned traitor, Roboute Guilliman split the Army and Navy apart. The idea was simple: no single commander should ever again control both the ground forces and the fleets, because that’s exactly how a rebellion becomes a civil war.

The aftermath also saw many Great Crusade-era warships retired. Vessels like the Infernus Class Battleship were judged too powerful to leave in any one commander’s hands.

How the fleets are organised

The Navy divides into five great fleets, one per Segmentum Majoris. Each takes its name from the region it guards, so you get Battlefleet Solar, Battlefleet Obscurus, and so on.

Those grand fleets break down into smaller formations covering individual sectors and subsectors, usually named after whatever they protect. Battlefleet Gothic is the classic example, defending the Gothic Sector.

Ships of the line

The Navy’s order of battle runs from battleships and grand cruisers down through battle cruisers, cruisers, and light cruisers to escorts. Older and obsolete classes still turn up too, often kept alive by sheer inertia and the difficulty of replacing them.

Class designations aren’t perfectly consistent across sources, so treat hull names and roles as broadly indicative rather than fixed. Attack craft and aircraft round out a fleet’s striking power.

The Navy also operates aquatic vessels on worlds where that matters, which is a nice reminder that ‘navy’ isn’t always about the void.

  • Battleships: the heaviest line ships, rare and precious
  • Cruisers and grand cruisers: the workhorses of most engagements
  • Escorts: fast, numerous, and expendable
  • Attack craft and aircraft: carried striking power
  • Obsolete classes: still in service long past their prime

Key facts

  • Also known as the Navis Imperialis in High Gothic
  • Formed after the Horus Heresy in M31, succeeding the Imperialis Armada
  • Split from the Imperial Army by Roboute Guilliman to prevent future rebellions
  • Organised into five Segmentum fleets, subdivided into sector and subsector fleets
  • Led by the Lord High Admiral, headquartered on Terra
  • Handles void warfare, warp transit, and orbital support for ground forces

FAQ

Is the Imperial Navy the same as the Imperial Guard?

No. The Astra Militarum (Imperial Guard) handles ground warfare, while the Imperial Navy handles warships and void combat. They were deliberately separated after the Horus Heresy so no one commander could control both.

When was the Imperial Navy founded?

It took its current form after the Horus Heresy in M31, replacing the old Imperialis Armada that had been part of the Imperial Army.

Who leads the Imperial Navy?

The Lord High Admiral of the Imperial Navy, with Naval Headquarters based on Terra.
