The Imperial Navy’s fleets are the void-borne war machine of the Imperium, the warships that hold the stars between the Emperor’s worlds. If the Astra Militarum holds the ground, the Navy holds everything above it, and without it, nothing gets reinforced, supplied, or saved.
What the Imperial Navy actually is
The Imperial Navy, or Navis Imperialis in High Gothic, is one of the Imperium’s armed forces. It’s the military arm of the wider Imperial Fleet, and it handles warships, void combat, and the defence of Imperial space. Ground fighting belongs to the Astra Militarum, but the Navy owns the space between planets.
It wasn’t always separate. During the Great Crusade it existed as the Imperialis Armada, a sub-branch of the Imperial Army. After the Horus Heresy, Roboute Guilliman split the Army and Navy apart so no single commander could ever again command both a fleet and a ground army. That decision still shapes the Imperium today.
How the fleets are organised
The Navy divides into five great fleets, one per Segmentum Majoris. Each takes its name from its region, so you get Battlefleet Solar, Battlefleet Obscurus, and so on. Below that, they break into smaller fleets watching individual sectors and subsectors, usually named for whatever they protect. Battlefleet Gothic guarding the Gothic Sector is the classic example.
The administrative heart sits at Naval Headquarters on Terra, under the Lord High Admiral of the Imperial Navy.
- Five Segmentum-level battlefleets, one per major region.
- Sector and subsector fleets handle local patrol and defence.
- Naval Headquarters on Terra is the top-level command.
The ships they fight with
The Navy’s lineup runs from massive battleships down to small escort squadrons, with cruisers doing most of the day-to-day work. Grand cruisers and battle cruisers sit between the big capital ships and standard cruisers, while light cruisers and escorts screen the fleet and hunt raiders.
Some Great Crusade-era designs were retired after the Heresy because they were considered too powerful to trust to any one commander. Attack craft and aircraft also fly from Navy carriers, and the Navy even keeps aquatic vessels for worlds with oceans worth fighting over.
| Class | Role |
|---|---|
| Battleship | Heaviest line ship, fleet anchor |
| Grand cruiser | Heavy cruiser, older and rarer |
| Battle cruiser | Fast, hard-hitting cruiser variant |
| Cruiser | Backbone of most fleets |
| Light cruiser | Scout and escort leader |
| Escort | Screening, raiding, patrol |
Why it matters
The Imperium is a scatter of worlds linked by warp travel. Lose the fleets and you lose the link. Reinforcements don’t arrive, food doesn’t ship, and a planet under siege is on its own. That’s why the Navy gets the best shipyards and the most paranoid command structure the Imperium can manage.
It also means the Navy is a political animal. Fleet commanders hold enormous power, and the post-Heresy separation of Army and Navy exists precisely because the Imperium doesn’t trust anyone with too much of it.

FAQ
Is the Imperial Navy the same as the Imperial Fleet?
No. The Imperial Fleet is the broader organisation, and the Imperial Navy is its military arm. The Navy does the fighting, the Fleet covers the wider structure.
Why was the Navy split from the Imperial Army?
After the Horus Heresy, Roboute Guilliman separated them so no single commander could control both ground and void forces. It was a safeguard against another large-scale rebellion.
How many main fleets does the Imperial Navy have?
Five, one for each Segmentum Majoris, such as Battlefleet Solar. Each is then split into sector and subsector fleets.
