The Macharius

In Warhammer 40k, the Macharius name belongs to two things: Lord Commander Solar Macharius, the greatest Imperial Guard commander in history, and the heavy tank that carries his name into battle.

Who was Macharius?

Macharius was a human, not a saint, though the Imperium made him one after he died. Born on Donia in 356.M41, he rose from a planetary governor’s heir to the youngest Lord Commander Solar ever appointed. He led the Macharian Crusade from 392.M41, claiming nearly a thousand worlds in just seven years.

He died in 400.M41, officially of jungle fever. His actual death was an assassination by someone called Anna. The Imperium covered it up.

He’s remembered as the Patron Saint of the Imperial Guard, and his conquests came at a time when the Imperium was still recovering from the Age of Apostasy.

What is the Macharius heavy tank?

The Macharius is a heavy tank named after the Lord Solar, often called a second-generation Baneblade. It fills the same battlefield role but is smaller, cheaper, and easier to build.

Mars keeps tight control over true Baneblade production, so Forge Worlds that can’t get the STC data build Macharius tanks instead. It’s a common sight in Imperial Guard regiments.

The design was reconstructed by Magos Nalax of Lucius from fragments of a lost blueprint. The work took two hundred years, and Nalax died before production began in 852.M41.

  • Twin synchronized battle cannons in the main turret
  • Very thick frontal armour, but less firepower than a Baneblade
  • First rolled off the line for the Death Korps of Krieg
  • Variants include the Vanquisher, Vulcan, and Omega

Why the Macharius name matters

Macharius represents the peak of Imperial Guard achievement. His crusade pushed to the edge of the galaxy, and his armies only stopped when they refused to face the psychic darkness beyond.

The tank keeps that legacy alive on the battlefield. It’s a symbol of Imperial ambition and the practical limits of what the Adeptus Mechanicus can still build.

How did Macharius die?

Officially he died of jungle fever in 400.M41. The truth is he was assassinated by someone named Anna.
