The Maerorus Temple

The Maerorus Temple was a secret, illegal seventh temple of the Officio Assassinorum, built to create assassins who could kill entire crowds with nothing but their own bodies. It’s remembered for one horrifying success, Legienstrasse, and the decades-long war it took to put her down.

What the Maerorus Temple was

Most Officio Assassinorum temples specialise in a single kind of killing. The Maerorus was the exception: its assassins were designed to wipe out multiple targets at once, like an enemy army’s whole command staff or the scattered members of a Chaos cult.

The logic was grim but simple. Kill one target and the rest scatter or go to ground, so the temple wanted operatives who could move through a crowded room and kill everyone before anyone reacted. Their only weapon was their own body, which wouldn’t jam, run dry, or break.

How a Maerorus assassin worked

A Maerorus assassin entered a target-rich place, usually a meeting or gathering, and killed as quickly as possible. Membranes along the body absorbed the victim’s biomass, and that fresh genetic material triggered fast, violent mutations that made the assassin stronger with every kill.

The result was a foe that got harder to stop the longer a fight went on. The temple considered a Maerorus assassin practically impossible to kill, which is exactly why the project was so dangerous once it slipped its leash.

  • No carried weapons: the body itself is the weapon.
  • Absorbs biomass from victims to fuel rapid mutation.
  • Grows stronger and tougher with each kill.
  • Built to slaughter groups, not single targets.

Legienstrasse, the first and last graduate

The temple began in the early years of M40 as an illegal experiment camp. Hereteks working under Officio Assassinorum orders spent centuries and enormous bribes, including handing an STC to the Mechanicus, to develop the forbidden tech. Thousands of prisoners were rendered down for genetic material.

The first and only Maerorus assassin was Legienstrasse, made from forbidden technology, mutant cross-breeding, and xenos hybrids, most likely Tyranid strains. Because she was female and carried that alien DNA, she could lay eggs. At least one clutch hatched, and the infants ate an entire company of Imperial Guard alive.

The war on Opis and Legienstrasse’s death

Legienstrasse eventually went rogue and decided she could topple the Imperium. To reach her, the Officio Assassinorum seeded the remote planet Opis with Chaos cults and stirred up civil unrest, then had a Vindicare kill Lord Inquisitor Kekrops and most of his retinue when he came to investigate.

The blame fell on Opis’s ruling class, and full war followed. Dozens of Imperial Guard regiments and a force of Imperial Fists under Captain Darnath Lysander were sent in, partly to force Legienstrasse into the open. She fought off Space Marines, an Emperor’s Champion, a Culexus Grand Master, and a Vindicare Grand Master at once.

Lysander finally killed her by pinning a dying Eversor to her with the Black Sword; the Eversor’s death explosion crippled and poisoned her. He cut off her head, and she still lived. Only smashing her body to dust with his Thunder Hammer finished it. Lysander was the only survivor.

Why it matters

The Maerorus Temple is the Imperium’s cautionary tale about its own weapons programs. The Officio Assassinorum broke its own rules, made deals with heretics and xenos tech, and still couldn’t control what it built.

It also shows how far the Assassinorum will go to clean up a mistake. They pacted with daemons and World Eaters Chaos Space Marines, sacrificed an innocent planet, and spent centuries hunting Legienstrasse’s offspring. It’s unclear if they ever caught them all.

FAQ

Was the Maerorus Temple a real temple of the Officio Assassinorum?

Yes, it was created as a seventh temple, but it was illegal and renegade. It was developed off the books using forbidden technology and heretical research.

Who was the only Maerorus assassin?

Legienstrasse, the first and last graduate. She was created from forbidden gene-tech and xenos hybrids, most likely Tyranid, and later went rogue.

How did Legienstrasse die?

Captain Darnath Lysander pinned a dying Eversor to her so its death explosion would cripple and poison her. After cutting off her head failed, he smashed her body to dust with his Thunder Hammer.

Could Legienstrasse make more assassins?

Yes. Because she was female and carried xenos DNA, she could lay eggs. One clutch hatched and its infants ate an entire Imperial Guard company, and the Assassinorum spent centuries hunting the offspring.
