Darnath Lysander is the First Captain of the Imperial Fists, one of the most storied heroes in the Adeptus Astartes. He’s a stubborn, hammer-swinging legend who rose from a Terran pilgrim to command the Chapter’s elite 1st Company.
Who is Lysander?
Lysander is a Space Marine of the Imperial Fists, currently serving as First Captain, Master of the 1st Company, Overseer of the Armoury, and Watch Commander of the Phalanx. He’s been active since around M40, making him one of the longest-serving heroes in the Chapter.
He was born on Holy Terra itself, which is rare for a Space Marine recruit. After a 13-year pilgrimage that killed his parents, he survived the Waaagh! Grozdakk and the Quesarch Heresy, which made him famous. Chaplain Shadryss found him near the Pillar of Bone and took it as a sign from Rogal Dorn, so he recruited him on the spot.
From scout to first captain
Lysander started as a Scout and fought the Iron Warriors for the first time under Warsmith Shon’tu. He let the Warsmith escape to save a hostage, a call he later regretted.
He first shows up in the Liber Honorus Imperial Fists in 567.M40 as a sergeant in the 2nd Company, winning at the Battle of Colonial Bridge on Iduno. By 585.M40 he’d taken command of the 2nd Company after boarding and capturing an Eldar cruiser called Blood of Khaine.
During the three-year siege of Haddrake Tor, he led a drop pod assault on the peaks, set up teleport homers for the 1st Company Terminators, and watched Captain Kleitus die. Kleitus passed him the Fist of Dorn, a mighty Thunder Hammer, and Lysander used it to crush the heretics. With the 1st Company gutted, he was promoted to First Captain.
Wargear and tactics
Lysander is famous for the Fist of Dorn, a Thunder Hammer he inherited from Kleitus. He’s a close-combat monster who leads from the front, often dropping in with Terminators or spearheading boarding actions.
His titles give him authority over the Chapter’s armoury and the Phalanx, the Imperial Fists’ mobile fortress-monastery. That makes him a key figure in fleet actions and siege warfare.
Why Lysander matters
Lysander embodies the Imperial Fists’ stubborn, siege-minded ethos. He’s a living link to the Chapter’s Terran roots and its darkest hours, like the Haddrake Tor disaster.
For fans, he’s a fan-favourite character with a long history and a distinctive model. For the lore, he’s a reminder that even heroes make costly mistakes and carry the weight of them.
