Rubric Marines are the silent, dust-filled legionaries of the Thousand Sons, created by the Rubric of Ahriman. They’re not really soldiers anymore, they’re enchanted suits of armour with trapped souls inside, and they’re some of the most unsettling troops in Chaos.
What happened to them
After the Thousand Sons fled into the Eye of Terror, mutation ran wild through the Legion. To stop it, Ahriman cast a massive spell called the Rubric of Ahriman. It went wrong. Every Marine without psychic power was turned to ash, their souls sealed inside their armour.
Those suits can still fight and take orders, but they’ve got no fear and no will of their own. Without a sorcerer nearby, Rubric Marines just go still and wait.
How they fight
A single Aspiring Sorcerer can control a whole squad, enchanting their bolters to fire Inferno Bolts. Those shots punch through ordinary armour and burn the target’s soul. It’s nasty stuff.
Rubricae don’t think or improvise. They march, they aim, they fire, and they soak up punishment that would break a living Marine.
- Inferno Bolters: standard ranged weapon, soul-burning ammo
- Warpflamers: for close-range horror
- Soulreaper Cannons: one per unit, heavy support
- Aspiring Sorcerer leads the squad, often with a plasma pistol and force stave
Death and rebirth
When a Rubric Marine falls, the dried remains inside pour out as dust. Only a powerful sorcerer can gather that dust, reseal the armour, and perform the ritual to bring him back. One wrong syllable and the sorcerer goes insane or dies on the spot.
Some warbands even conquer whole worlds just to reach old battlefields, so they can raise Rubricae from Thousand Sons who died there long ago. That’s how seriously they take getting their brothers back.
Odd cases and exceptions
The Ynnari once restored Rubricae to full life, memories and all, as a trick against Ahriman. It proved the Rubric could be undone, at least temporarily.
There’s also a variant called the Rubric Marine Genie, whose lower body is just a swirling dust cloud. And Helio Isidorus stands out as the only Rubricae ever restored to flesh, though he lost his memories in the process.

FAQ
Are Rubric Marines alive?
Not in the normal sense. They’re disembodied spirits trapped inside their armour, with no will or fear of their own. They can fight and follow orders, but they’re basically animated suits.
Can Rubric Marines be brought back?
Yes, but it’s dangerous. A sorcerer has to collect the dust, reseal the armour, and perform a complex ritual. A single mistake can kill or madden the caster.
What’s the Rubric of Ahriman?
It was a massive spell cast by Ahriman to stop mutation in the Thousand Sons. It turned all non-psychic Marines to dust and sealed their souls in their armour.
