The Rubric of Ahriman

The Rubric of Ahriman is the spell that turned most of the Thousand Sons Legion into dust inside their own armour. Ahriman meant to save his brothers from mutation. He succeeded, and damned them instead.

What the rubric actually did

Ahriman was Chief Librarian of the Thousand Sons, and by the time of the Horus Heresy his Legion was falling apart. Mutation was spreading through their ranks, and their patron god Tzeentch wasn’t helping. So Ahriman gathered the Legion’s strongest sorcerers into a cabal and built a spell he believed would purify every Thousand Sons Marine forever.

The spell was huge. It rolled across the Planet of Sorcerers as a storm of blue and yellow lightning, and even the daemons of the Warp pulled back from it. Magnus eventually stepped in and stopped it.

Then came the results. Fewer than a hundred Thousand Sons with real psychic power had their abilities boosted. Everyone else, the vast majority with little or no psychic talent, had their bodies turned to dust. Their spirits stayed trapped inside their sealed armour, unable to escape. That’s where Rubric Marines come from.

Why it matters

The Rubric is the reason the Thousand Sons still exist as a Legion, and the reason they’re horrifying. Mutation can’t touch Rubric Marines anymore. But they’re also soulless automatons who can’t act on their own, and they need a nearby Sorcerer to guide them.

It also broke the Legion’s leadership. Magnus was furious, and he exiled Ahriman and the rest of the cabal. After that, Magnus threw himself into conquering the galaxy and swore to see the Imperium burn.

The second rubric and the pyrodomon

Ahriman spent ages trying to undo what he’d done. He eventually attempted a Second Rubric, planning to sacrifice his own life to restore his brothers. It went wrong. The sorcerer Astraeos interfered, several shards of Magnus were working against each other, and in the chaos another sorcerer named Knekku grabbed the ritual’s energy and used it to repair Magnus’s shattered mind instead.

The Second Rubric looked like a total failure until one Rubricae, Helio Isidorus, turned up alive. That turned out to be worse news. Helio was a vessel for the pyrodomon, a condition that turns sorcerers into Rubricae and spreads from there.

FAQ

Why did Ahriman cast the Rubric?

He wanted to stop the rampant mutation that was destroying the Thousand Sons Legion. He believed the spell would purify his brothers permanently. It did, but it also stripped most of them of their bodies.

What happened to the Thousand Sons who weren’t psychic?

Their bodies were reduced to dust, and their spirits were sealed inside their armour with no way out. These are the Rubric Marines.

Was the Rubric a success or a failure?

Both. It made the Legion immune to mutation, which was the goal. But it also turned most of them into automatons and got Ahriman exiled, so it’s usually remembered as a disaster.

What is the pyrodomon?

A condition discovered after the failed Second Rubric. It turns sorcerers into Rubricae, and it was found inside Helio Isidorus, the one Rubricae who seemed to have been restored to life.
