The Gal Vorbak were the Word Bearers Legion’s first Possessed Chaos Space Marines. They walked into the Eye of Terror as Astartes and came back sharing their bodies with daemons, and their debut at the Drop Site Massacre made them one of the most infamous units of the Horus Heresy.
What the Gal Vorbak were
The name means “The Blessed Sons” in Colchisian, and they’re also called The Unburdened. They started out as the Serrated Sun Chapter of the Word Bearers, the Legion that had spent decades hunting for a truth bigger than the Emperor’s Imperial Truth.
That search took them to Cadia and into the Eye of Terror with the daemon Ingethel the Ascended. What they found there was the Primordial Truth, and it changed them permanently. Daemons took up residence inside their bodies, and most of the marines accepted the arrangement willingly in exchange for power beyond what a normal Astartes could field.
So they weren’t just corrupted marines. They were the template, the first Legionaries to prove that a human and a warp entity could share one body and still function as a soldier.
The Drop Site Massacre and Argel Tal
Their first big showing was the Drop Site Massacre on Isstvan V, fighting the loyalist Legions alongside the rest of the traitors. It went badly for them. The original Gal Vorbak were effectively wiped out in that battle, dying against the Adeptus Custodes and Corax.
The one survivor was Argel Tal, their Crimson Lord and Captain of the 7th Company. He went on to build a second generation of the unit, known as the Vakrah Jal, so the concept didn’t die with the first batch.
What made them look and fight differently
Pre-Heresy Word Bearers wore grey. The Gal Vorbak wore crimson, which made them stand out on any battlefield and marked them as something set apart from their brothers.
Their wargear was built for close combat, loaded with spikes and blades. That fits what they were: shock troops meant to get in close and tear things apart, not sit back and trade bolter fire.
- Crimson armour instead of the Legion’s standard grey
- Spiked and bladed wargear geared toward melee
- Daemon-host bodies that boosted already superhuman Astartes abilities

How they connect to the wider lore
The Gal Vorbak are the origin point for Possessed marines as a concept. Everything the Word Bearers did with daemonhosts afterward builds on what the Serrated Sun proved possible in the Eye of Terror.
They’re also a direct link between Lorgar’s Legion and the Primordial Truth, since they’re the ones who carried that revelation back to him. If you want to understand why the Word Bearers fell harder and earlier than most Legions, the Gal Vorbak are where that story starts.
