The Luna Wolves

The Luna Wolves were the XVI Space Marine Legion, the fighting force that became the Sons of Horus. They’re the Legion Horus Lupercal led into rebellion against the Emperor, so they sit at the center of the Horus Heresy and most of the setting’s later history.

Who they were

The Luna Wolves started life as the XVI Legion, raised from the hunter clans of Terra’s Jutrigan Bowl and Samsatian sub-plate. Those slums bred tough, independent people, and the early Legion earned a name as shock troops during the Unification Wars and the first push of the Great Crusade. They hit fast, and they finished fights.

Their Primarch was Horus Lupercal, and their homeworld was Cthonia. After Horus became Warmaster, the Legion was renamed the Sons of Horus. Their colors shifted too, from white and black to light green and black.

From Luna to the Emperor’s Wolves

One of the XVI’s earliest campaigns shaped everything that followed. In the First Pacification of Luna, the Legion took the critical objective and grabbed a lot of attention doing it. They picked up the unofficial nickname ‘the Emperor’s Wolves’, and they were tithed the bulk of the output from the captured gene-labs. That gene-seed let them grow fast, and growing fast meant they needed more recruits.

A lot of those recruits didn’t volunteer. The original XVI is believed to have been rounded up from Cthonia’s violent gangs by recruitment squads sent from Terra. Thousands of gangers were shipped off to the geno-laboratories on Luna, modified and indoctrinated into Space Marines.

When the Emperor found Horus, he officially renamed the Legion the Luna Wolves to honor their early victories on Terra’s moon. By the time Horus took command, the Legion was ten thousand strong.

The first thirty years of the Great Crusade

Horus was the first Primarch recovered, cast closer to Terra than the rest. For years he was the Emperor’s only found son, and the two were close. The Emperor taught him, encouraged him, and handed him command of the Legion built from his own gene-code.

With those warriors behind him, Horus fought beside the Emperor for the first thirty years of the Great Crusade. Together they built the young Imperium’s first real expansion.

That closeness shaped the Legion’s personality. They were led by their Primarch almost from the start, and they spent decades under the Emperor’s direct eye. They came to see themselves as the pre-eminent Legion: proud, confident, and determined to conquer more, faster, and better than anyone else. Whether their combat records actually back that up is a fair question, and the sources leave room for doubt.

How they fought

The Luna Wolves specialized in flexible organization, decapitation strikes, and planetary assault. They aimed to tear out enemy command structures, often holding back in reserve until the moment was right and then delivering the killing blow.

Their battle cry was ‘Lupercal!’ or ‘For the Warmaster!’, and later, ‘Blood on the stars, down to the dark, we hold the coins of their lives!’

After the Heresy

Most of the Legion fled into the Eye of Terror after the Heresy. They were shattered during the Legion Wars, and after the Battle of Harmony large numbers of them were absorbed into Ezekyle Abaddon’s Black Legion. A few warbands, later called the Thrice-Cursed Traitors, stayed independent and still operate as Sons of Horus.

The records also cover the Legion’s combat disposition, known Great Crusade units, known post-Heresy warbands, and a category of 24 named Luna Wolves characters. That list includes Garviel Loken, Hastur Sejanus, and Abaddon himself, who went on to found the Black Legion.
